PR application - precedure??????

PR application - procedure??????
I'm British and going to marry my Canadian fiance in January. After submitting the sponsorship details for PR and once the sponsor is approved, can the applicant (myself) remain in Canada and work there legally? Or must/can the applicant return to their respective home country.
Many thanks in advance, I'm really confused...!
