Potential job offer - more questions
 

Hi,

My husband has had his interview and has been told they will send him the forms so they can check immigration eligibility and security checks and if he passes those then a job offer will be made.
The security checks I'm not to worried about as he has security clearance in his current job so cant see anything stopping him getting that.
Does anyone know what sort of things we will be asked in the immigration form?

Only my husband and one of my children have current passports, I am getting the forms to renew mine and get 3 of my children theirs, however my 4 year olds will expire in 1 year so should I get him a new one? (can I even do that if it has a year left?)

What type of job has he been interviewed for and what is his profession?
If this job requires a Labour Market Impact Assessment then the employer has to pay $1000 and apply for it.
If they get a positive LMIA then the work permit if a UK citizen can be applied for at a port of entry and everyone will need valid passports for the duration of any work permit issued on arrival.
My guess is that if your OH doesn't currently have a work permit issued in Canada with authorization to work for anyone (open work permit) or the position is LMIA exempt then don't go spending too much money and getting excited as obtaining an LMIA is now very tough as the Canadian employer has to show that no Canadians or PRs of Canada are qualified to do the job or that none have applied for the job once advertised.

Confusedmom: no need to panic or rush around getting passports in haste. If/when the job offer & WP come through you'll have plenty of time to get/renew them.

Re passports - we were in a similar position to you 5 years ago. Mine and my son's were due for renewal, my daughter's had a year to go. At that time, and I'm assuming it hasn't changed, you could renew up to 9 months in advance and complete months, up to a maximum of 9, were added to the new passport. We decided to renew hers anyway, and forfeit 3 months to get it done and sorted, rather than having to remember to do it in a years time.

Its with Babcock marine, not a company transfer as that fell through. He is an engineer and has specialist skills.
As they are a large defence company that have many Brits working for them I'm assuming they have ways of getting the LMIA or don't need one.

Brill about the passports, just didn't want the eligibility form to come in and need passport numbers, will leave them till later in the process if it gets any further.

"They'll" have the same way/route to getting an LMIA as any other company; as described by FL above.

Sorry I just meant that they must know if they are likely to get an LMIA as they will have needed them in the past not that they would have ways round the system. However it appears they are harder to obtain now than they were so fingers crossed.
I will cling to the hope that the company pay my husbands current company to come out and do specific jobs for them as it is very specialised and they don't have that capability (not many people do) and that that will work in our favour.

You won't be asked anything in the immigration forms, as you have no forms to fill in. The company has to apply for the LMIA and then you just get your permits at the airport normally.

So if the company are talking about forms, it must be their own forms they're referring to.

I suspect the company has their own due diligence check form/declaration that you sign for immigration.
I suspect on that form are questions that would be aimed at establishing whether or not you may be successful in getting PR in the future (or even the work permit?). So there may be questions about your background, whether you have been convicted on any offences, your health etc
Its a big investment to employ someone from overseas and if they have employed lots of brits before they may well have been stung by people unable to get PR.
