Plumbing - Help Please!
 

can anyone recommend a plumbing course either in Niagara or London area of Ontario?

We are thinking of coming out on a student visa so my husband can train as a plumber until our PR Visas come through.

He is a graduate already but is willing to start again at bottom in training etc.

Alternatively could he train here and get it recognised easily over there?

No idea about the first bit. When you say train here, do you mean train as a UK plumber, or try to train as a Canadian plumber in the UK? The two plumbing systems are quite different. I guess it could make it easier to train in Canada if he had already learnt plumbing skills (soldering is soldering).

Hi thanks for your reply. I meant train in UK as UK plumber and then maybe he could get qualifications recognised in Canada - or is it start back at ground level again in Canada i.e.e 4 year apprenticeships?

I simply don't know the answer to that but I suspect it's the one you don't want to hear.

I've got some guys coming in tomorrow to install AC (OK, not exactly plumbers but close enough). I'll ask them what the score is. I imagine it will be the same with most of the licensed trades.

I had a chat with one of the guys. He didn't really know about plumbing but reckoned that it would be the same as in his trade (refrigeration). In other words, 4-year apprenticeships.

I can't see that it would do any harm for your bloke to learn basic plumbing skills, though, even if the systems are rather different in the UK and Canada. I don't imagine that training as a Canadian plumber while in the UK is feasible; it's rather a hands-on thing (unless there is some sort of plumbing equivalent of a flight simulator - a virtual bog).

Hi, i am a newbie on here who's seriously thinking of going to Canada to live. I am also a qualified plumber/CORGI gas engineer in the uk. In regard to training as a plumber in the UK, near London where i live it is nearly impossible for anyone to train as a plumber without being in full-time employment as an apprentice, and qualifications are 1, 2, or 3 years for each level. Even colleges will not accept you unles you have a job to gain experience. Unfortunately night school or 3 week courses will not teach you anything meaningful in the real world, you might learn how to change taps and solder a bit of pipe!
