Plumbing in Calgary

Hi,
We'll hopefully be coming to Calgary later this year. My 21yr old son is a qualified plumber in the UK and we need to convince him that his prospects in Calgary are as good, or better, than in the UK. Has anyone any idea regarding the demand for plumbers in this area?
Thanks
Steve

There's a demand for everything in Calgary just now, unless you're in the Gas fuel side of things..... He may need to go through a journeyman process before being considered seriously for any positions here. Not sure how that works though....!?? You might want to try a phone call to a plumbers here in Calgary and they will advise you on the process. Corny, but a company near me you could try is "Pete the Plumber" www.petetheplumber.com/

Good luck

Dobbie:thumbsup:

If you want to see the demand for plumbers in Calgary I'd suggest taking regular looks at The Calgary Sun jobpages (sorry, don't know the web address), alternatively there is www.calgaryjobshop.com

There are loads of trade jobs, but as someone else mentioned here he'll have to 'upgrade' his qualifications (it can't be difficult.) Trades wages may be lower depending on where you look, but there is LOADS of work for those willing to go for it! Even if he can get himself here without a job, I'm sure he'll do good business by doing a little self advertising. Reliable Tradesmen are like so hard to find!!!

And if he does make it here ...let me know. I'll probably need some good plumbing work done in my basement in a few years when I do it up!

Good luck!

Demand for plumbers in Calgary is huge, besides residential, there is a new hospital being built, and renos to the existing ones. Downtown 4 major skyscrapers are going up, and a water treatment plant is being built.
We have full employment for the next 5yrs+.

Interesting piece on CBC radio just a few minutes ago.

Apparently there is an approximate 20% drop in new home construction here in Calgary.

They were interviewing the owner of Canyon Plumbing and he was saying that the slow down in new home construction is just starting to affect them and they are redeploying or laying off personnel. He did add there is still lots of work in the renovation and commercial areas.

He also stated that this was not necessarily a bad thing as they were previously having trouble keeping up with demand and were now getting a chance to catch their collective breath.

Cheers
Steve

It would be good to see some good plumbers over here. Nearly every house I've seen so far has had a pretty poor standard of plumbing. Don't get me started on electrics!

You might need to check and see if the qualifications are recognized here and whether he may have to do additional training here. But to be honest given the standard of some of what I've seen, my 4 year old son could do better, so there should be no issues.

It is true what is being said, house construction is slowing - which will have an inevitable effect on the trades. However I expect there is a high demand for jobs such as general modifications, basement plumbing etc to existing homes.

Good luck....
