Plumbers License

Hi

I am coming to Toronto area to job search on 26th October therefore I have applied for varous positions from here in Scotland and followed them up by calls etc.
I have just been told by one particular employer that once I obtain a license, to call him back.
Can you please tell me how I would obtain this license and would it be possible to do so when I am there?
Is this connected to Red Seal test?
If so, who would I contact etc?

Many Thanks

You'd either need an Ontario provincial license another provincial license issued under Red Seal . Ultimately they would be one and the same. However a Red Seal issued in BC would also be valid in ON, which is the purpose of Red Seal trades. Red Seal in itself is not a license, the provinces issue licenses and being Red Seal makes it transferable across the country. Prior to Red Seal a BC plumber would have to take another license test in ON if he wanted to set up shop there.

You don't need Red Seal in Ontario. You do need to take the apprenticeship exams. Zapone has given a link with all the info you need.

If you have all the information you need to be assessed it may be possible for them to agree there and then that you are eligible to take the test. You may even be lucky and get a date while you are over.

Plumbing is a Red Seal trade, so if you pass the ON apprenticeship, you get Red Seal. Red Seal in itself is not a qualification.

Really? I read the website as meaning that there was a separate exam for the interprovincial Red Seal certification.

The purpose of Red Seal is to make provincial qualifications transportable. When an apprentice goes through a Red Seal trade they get an inter provincially recognized license. When an apprentice goes through the apprenticeship program they take the Red Seal test as part of that program. An alternative is to challenge the course and just take the exams if you have enough hours to do so.

That would be AMAZING! But...........Have I just read correctly that........In order for you to take the test, you need an SIN? :( Which obviously I wouldn't have.

This is how I read the Alberta apprenticeship site too.

A qualified plumber would be one who has served his/her apprenticeship. However they can in their last year take the Red Seal exam if they choose to.

Plumber apprentices may take an interprovincial exam in the final period of their apprenticeship training to earn a Red Seal (certification recognized in most parts of Canada).

oh yes, problem there. But you could submit all your documents and get approval to sit the exam. That would be one step further forward and might help convince employers to take you on.

Re: Plumbers License

Hi
We looked in to moving to ON and my OH is a plumber.
You have to have 9000 hours of work experience, NOT including your training. You will then be able to sit the exam for the Certificate of Qualification. This Cert enables you to practise as a a plumber in ON. Requirements for the Cert of Qual differ from province to province. Once you have the Ontario Certificate of Qualification you then have the option to sit the exam for the Red Seal. The Red Seal on your original Certificate of Qualification overrides the requirements in other provinces and allows you to practise anywhere.
If you want to PM me your email address, i will forward the email i received when we were looking into it. It has a few links in that were really helpful.

Hope this helps/makes sense!
Linz
