plumber on a recce trip to NS

Hi all!
My OH has decided to do a recce trip in April and he will be doing this without me:( We have already applied for PR but now i have applied to uni in Halifax and if everything goes ok regarding getting a study permit etc we hope to be moving over this summer! BUT.. we really need OH to be in employment! So i was just wondering if anyone knew what the current conditions were like for a plumber seeking employment? He already has all the info reg the red seal exam from the appropriate officials, but we just wanted to know what the situation was like for plumbers out there!!! Any advice would be sooo appreciated as i'm not sure i'm doing the right thing letting him go out there alone (he'll never manage to do everything he has to do!!)
Thanks in advance, Amanda

I have a couple of Canadian friends who have their own business and they are overwhelmed with work. I don't know how easy it would be to actually get a job, but the work is definitely out there.

Hi thanks for the reply! I know that him getting the job will be the difficult part but it is good to know that there is at least some work out there!! Some industries are finding it very difficult at the moment. I have read that it would be worth while for him to telephone some companies ahead and explain that he is coming out on a recce trip and try to arrange an appointment. Do you think this would be a good idea or not?

It sure is - as well as gathering information from the CIC website about employing someone on a TWP. Offer to send the link to people when you speak with them on the phone. Some employers can be put off as they think it is going to be difficult for them, when in reality it isn't. Also Nova Scotia Immigration are SO helpful it is untrue!

So if he were to send a link to potential employers would the info be the same for the OWP and the TWP? I know there are differences between them but will potential employers view them both in the same way? It will be an OWP he has due to me (hopefully!) having a study visa!!

Oh if it is an open work permit (sorry I didn't read through your post properly to start with!) then he can work just as a Canadian can, so it's no problem! If they offer him a job, he just shows them his OWP and they take a copy for their file and that is it.

thanks thats great news!!! The only thing is he wont have the OWP at the time he does the recce trip as i have only just applied to Uni, do you think that will put people off? and also, do you think we may have problems getting the study visa for myself when we have already submitted an application for PR? So far all we have heard back is that they have received our fees and that we should here back by 2nd April as to whether we are elligable to procede to the next stage or not!
