Pickling Onions
 

Who used enjoy biting into a crispy, home made pickle onion around xmas time? I know I did.
I'm trying to get hold of some pickling onions for this xmas. Does anyone know where to buy them in Toronto?

I don't know but would suppose that, like everything else, they have them at the market. Until the last jar ran out, I just used to buy Bick's English Style but now can't find them. I too may have to pickle my own.

I just use shallots, or I pick out small normal onions.

Thanks everyone. I may have to try shallots, although they're not the right shape. I guess pickling your own onions isn't as popular in Canada as it is in the UK... easier to buy the pre-packaged ones......

My local No Frills and Food Basics both have bags of pickling onions and cucumbers around about now. I think it may be something the lower end supermarkets have more than the posher ones.

I've only ever seen those cocktail onions here. I'm sure they have their uses, but they are too small and far too sweet for me.

I too only really eat them around Christmas. I get mine from an English shop. I usually get a large Hawards jar for around $7.00 as I can't be arsed to make my own.

If there was somewhere near me that sold them I'd do the same. But there isn't, so I have to make them.

Have you tried produce stores? I imagine Toronto must have its fair share of them. In Vancouver they're often operated by immigrant families and often have better selections than the supermarkets, and I know I've seen pickling onions there.
