Picking up a puppy from the airport!

Hi Guys,

I know the 'dog' thing has been done to death, but all the threads I have found are to do with taking a dog with you and costs and stuff, my question is:

What procedure do you go through to collect a dog that has been shipped to you? Is it lengthy or straight forward?

Our situation is: We are buying a puppy that is going to be shipped from Washington to Calgary and just need to know what the process is this end. The Breeder (all checked out and kosher) is going to deal with the American side of things.

We would have of course preferred to be able to pick a puppy locally, but the breed (Chow Chow) we have decided to go for is extremely hard to get in Canada.

Sorry for the repetative question, I know someone will have the answers for me :D

ah yes, but you never hear sting complaining about the demise of the rain lamp posts. not sure they're endangered. Or maybe he's just too busy with Trudi and their tantric practice these days.

You'll probably have to pay GST on the dog, if you search the archive someone else had a friend who had to pay this at the airport as the dog was "new". Good luck with the puppy though, and may all your furniture legs be toothmark-free :)

Thank you for the replies! I am aware about the GST thing, but a small price to pay for a new baby! Our furniture legs are metal/non existant so hopefully will survive the anslaught of puppy! The only dogs I've seen around here are Bichon Shitzu's and mini snauchers (however you spell it) - not a pit bull in sight but they'll all probably come out of hiding when they see a cute fluffy puppy

It's been a year of persuasion to get a puppy (hubby not that keen) so hopefully she'll be good - fingers crossed eh!

When our GSDs arrived via Air Canada cargo at Calgary:

- Go to Cargo Terminal.
- Wait until plane lands You will then be given customs paperwork.
- Take customs paperwork to main terminal building along with other details such a proof of vacination (don't think is necessery for a puppy) and proof of how long you have had the dog (won't apply to you since no way will you escape the GST on the puppy). You have to pay about $40 to customs on top of the GST. Customs will then give you paperwork authorisingse of the dog.
-Take release paperwork back to Cargo terminal. There may be another small handling fee (surprise surprise :( )
- Wait patiently for dog(s) to be unloaded
- Hug dog(s)

Thanks for your reply, really helpful - at least we'll know what to expect.

Re: Picking up a puppy from the airport!

There are a lot of Chow Chow mixes in Canada, most in SPCA. which is quite sad. People do not know how bug they get or how much care they require with coats etc. I have seen many on the island where we are. Also Chow Chow breeders, but when it comes to getting a good breeder then that is a different thing, so it is worth going the distance. Quite a lot of dog breeders here seem little more than puppy farmers, and in the USA.

I drove to Seattle to collect my German Wire Haired Pointer, came from a rescue society though. Got vet that side to provide, rabies vacination and fit to travel documents, and they did not even look at them at the border! Just said "your pet " and that was it!
When we flew our beagle from England, it was not easy for us, despite all paper work being OK. It was the airline that lost papers and dog. Dog was found in warehouse quite some distance away. Horrible experience. If you are not flying with the dog then it is not as simple as if you were. If you fly with the dog it will be left at large luggage to be collected as if you were getting your bags. However if you are not on the plane , it will most likely be sent to the airlines cargo collection area, which may or may not be on airport. Ours was not on airport, and we had hell of a job finding it at night. Best to check with airline as to their procedure for collection when you are not on plane. Also worth asking customs at Calgary airport re collecting dogs and any latest documents required. That is what the customs lady at Vancouver said. "You should have asked us what we require, not Zoom!" Get everything in duplicate!
When our wirehaired was flowin up to Seattle they had to have the same documents state to state as they do form USA to Canada.

Love her to bits though. I am making a living as an artist here in BC and specialise in Pet Portraits so if you ever want a painting!!
