Gasoline Alley is just south of Red Deer on Highway 2 or is the another one west of Edmonton someplace?

It's about 350 kms from the west side of Edmonton to Jasper townsite to make that distance in 2.5 hours you would have to average 140 kph.
And some...it's 383km from Sherwood Park to Jasper, so 153kph in Winter!!!

OK......complete blonde moment or what!!!!!! I was thinking about our journeys to Calgary with the stop at Gasoline Alley. I know there is no hope for me!

I will hang my head in shame and promise not to post on anything to do with driving directions again!!!!!

As for the timing I was correct on that.......we do travel from Sherwood Park to Jasper in 3-4 hours so there

As for our friends.......he does drive like a nutter!!!! And that is not an exaggerated time. They rang us when they were leaving at 5.30pm and arrived with us at the Amethyst Hotel at 8pm.

There are over 35 ski hills/regions within 2 hours of Montreal. Both cities are small and well developed (the oldest and most historically significant cities in Canada, next to Halifax). Both are the most culturally developed cities in Canada - possibly in all of N.A. (with the exception of NYC, Boston and Philly - oh yeah, Hamilton too). Tons of job opportunities in many sectors - especially pharmaceuticals, IT, aerospace, rag trade, shipping trade, electrical components, etc. (speaking some French can be very helpful - but not essential; most of the trained anglos fled in the 1970's and 80's to Hogtown). Big demand for persons with post-grad degrees. Lots of Federal and Provincial Gov. work. Wages do not compare to those of TO or Kal-Garry. Properties and land are all very cheap both in Mtl and QC - check out MLS.ca for examples. Summer average is +15-25C and winter is -5 to -15C (5-6 months winter, and, err . . . 6-7 months "other" ). Excellent services provided by the state - although you pay for them through the high taxes (where else can a woman get 12 months paid maternity leave and the father can take 5 weeks paid too ?) Many smaller towns and municipalities surround both Mtl and QC - all between 20-80K pop.
One of the best things about both regions is that there are few Poms - more breathing space and more beer, eh ? The grass is a lush green - and I don't mean the grow-op mojo . . .
Am afraid you are wrong there - oldest city in North America is actually St John's in Newfoundland - established 1600. Quebec city was 1608, Halifax not until 1749.

Newfoundland is also a fantastic place to stay - ski-ing available at Humber Valley resort, heaps of culture and houses not too expensive at the moment.

However, may not tick all of your other boxes!

Mind I loves Newfoundland. Somewhere I have a shirt that says "When I die and heaven doesn't want me ..." but culture? G'won. Singing about fishing and logging and suffering isn't quite culture.

Heaps of culture here and not just the squiddly diddly music (to quote AX). In the next couple of weeks - George Street Festival, Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival, Buskers Festival. And the St John's Regatta - oldest sporting event in North America (although maybe not cultural!).

Have just had Sound Symposium, Festival of New Dance, Comedy Festival, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen.

Have a beautiful provincial museum (the rooms) and craft council galleries displaying all kinds of artwork from the province.

AND!!! The backstreet boys, Avril Levigne and Elton John (and you say we lack culture)

( the trailer park boys were just at the salmon festival at Grand Falls Windsor as well!)

After Bob Dylan and Leonard it took a wobble, but the anticipation of the backstreet boys and girlicious has given us something to look forward to.

So you too have an Indian casino? Do you also get Neil Diamond, Wayne Newton and Barry Manilow?

No Indian Casino here, and none of the above have made it to our tropical island. However, we did have the Proclaimers back in April, which was a great night out for two scottish ex pats!

All together now - and i will walk 500 miles ................
