I think the research comes under the "getting on with it"

for what it is worth , i have only been in Canada 3 weeks and to date the only true thing i miss about the uk is going out for a quick sundy lunch to our local pub. , but that is not the end of the world. i read the posts good and bad , get the advice i need , ignore what i deem as useless or negative posts , sometimes they start useful and diverse into something else , but who cares , i read what i feel like.
if we were all the same and succesful it would be boring ,if no one struggled , who would we help , i am grateful to those who have given advice and those who wished my mum well , as she was diagnosed with cancer and did not tell me as she knew it would make it harder for me to go.

i will no doubt encounter problems , but i did in the uk , 3 weeks down the line i have left my sister to write to british gas to give my meter reading , phone constantly engaged , insurance for cars is incredibly expensive here , but my house was over half the price as mine in the uk. life is what you make it , where ever you are , some are more fortuneate than others, i had a cosy easy life in uk , so why move ? a fresh challenge , a different way of life , and at the end of the day my choice.
so keep posting , keep wingeing , keep diversing off the subject and i will take what i need from you all.

enjoy canada , remember where you came from , and just live your life as best as possible, things could be worse.

You can do that in Schomberg, that's not far from Newmarket.

Very good post Tia, I used to be on here 24/7 a few months ago but for the past 3 months have been working full-time and am far too tired and on-goingly busy in the home to be on here anymore. I come on now and then for a nosey to see who's still around and see if the banter is still the same This is my first posting in over 3 months. We love our lives here on the whole, but are considering changing to another province as Alberta is outpricing us....that's my only moan!! I do think, though, that valuable advice on life here can still be achieved from asking on the B.E. boards.

I only recently joined this Forum so I am still amazed by all the posts that seem so negative about both Canada and the UK. I have lived here 30 years and I love it. It has not been without its challenges at times, but as other members have posted, that is true wherever you live. I also agree with others that it is the person that controls their environment and not the other way around, regardless of where you call home.

To 'Dentaltech' I commiserate. After 30 years I too still miss a nice pub at lunchtime on a Sunday. Yes there are plenty of good British style pubs here in Canada, but somehow they are not quite the same, although I have enjoyed a pint and a pie in many of them over the years. When I first came to Canada there were no pubs, just Bars for drinking in. You couldn't get a drink on Sunday unless you bought a meal and some places still had separate entrances and rooms for "Gentlemen" and "Ladies with Escorts" !!

I love my life here and so does my wife who emmigrated with me, so I don't forsee us ever going back to live in Britain. However, I still love the UK and enjoy visiting whenever I get the opportunity. I have travelled extensively but in my experience there is nothing to compare to that moment when your plane dips below the clouds on approach to land in 'Blighty' and you see the landscape below that is so unique to the UK with its meandering roads, hedgerows and irregular fields. It never fails to bring a smile to my face and a lump to my throat.

I came to Canada for the opportunities it offered me and in search of a different (not better) life. The quality of that experience is entirely in your own hands. For those heading to Canada or hoping to do so, I say "come on in and welcome". To those who can't wait to return to the UK, I wish them well and hope they will take something positive from their time in Canada. Like tasting a new food, you won't know if you like it unless you try it and some people have different tastes than others. Enjoy the diversity and the freedom to choose - it is a precious gift and too often taken for granted.

Hi all - great post Tia. Some very interesting points made by lots of people and of course the usual sniping.

Just wanted to add my little bit. We weren't overly unhappy in the UK and wanted to experience a new country - we chose Canada. Red Deer Alberta is now our home, we love it here. At the moment we are only on work permits - we decided to wait for PR this side of the fence, knowing that we were all healthy and had all the right ticks in the right boxes we decided to take the gamble of being refused PR. However since we have been here my hubby has developed High Blood Pressure (during the medicals) and we are now terrified we will be refused PR. Of course there are things/people we miss - there always will be - a friend from work has asked me to try and get a Fry's chocolate bar sent for her - she has been her nearly 50 years! My sister is sending me maltesers and gravy granuals - because thats what I was missing when she called me the other day. For all those that have queued and got PR and have landed and that are unhappy with what you find here - why not try a different province before you pack up and go back to England - from reading about canada each province is so very different, you may have just landed in one that doesn't fit!

I wish everybody good luck in moving here/staying here and those that have tried and are now going back.
