Pension nightmare
 

After emmigrating to Canada in 1966,i have put in for my pension,i only spent 4 months here after arriving and then went to Australia for 2 years and back to the UK for a year,then came back to Canada,where i have lived ever since.

Seems for me to qualify for the old age security pension,i have to proove that i was out of the country and i no doubt proove when i returned.

I dont have my original passport,which i should have kept as it would only be a mere 35 years out of date,there would be no record of me leaving Canada and as i never emmigrated to Australia,( Them days a person didnt need any documents,just arrived and got a job) so there dosent seem any documentation of me ever being there,i supose there must be something somewhere but after 40 years iv'e had no luck finding anything.

As regards coming back to Canada,i flew to Seattle and enterd Canada by land,so basicly a smile at the border was all that was required,

So basicly i will never get proof and this also disallowes me from getting the Garanteed income supplement

Also i now find out that i should have paid tax on any income to Canada from Australia,not realy sure if that was the case 40 something years ago,basicy that would also mean that also still theareticly being a resident of the Uk i should have been paying them as well,

Just wondered if anyone else had had this problem

So you have lived in Canada for 40 years, paid taxes both income and realty?
Surely you would have no problem proving this. Did you pay income taxes over the 40 years? That, in itself, would indicate you've been living here. Do you own property. While not proof you've lived here it certainly adds credibility to your claim.
You need to go and have a sit down visit with the pension people.

PROOF OF CANADIAN LEGAL STATUS (Refer to question 12 on the application)

To be eligible for the OAS pension, you must have legal status in Canada as well as meeting the residence requirement. You are considered to have legal status if you are a Canadian Citizen, a permanent resident (formerly known as Landed Immigrant) or you hold a Temporary Resident's permit (formerly known as a Minister's Permit) on the day before your application is approved or the day you left Canada, if you left within the last 6 months.

If you were born outside of Canada, a certified photocopy of one of the following documents is usually sufficient to confirm your Canadian citizenship or legal status:

Canadian Citizen: Certificate of Canadian citizenship, naturalization certificate, or Canadian passport issued in 1970 or later;

Permanent Resident (formerly known as Landed Immigrant): Canadian immigration documents (for example IMM1000 - Record of Landing or Permanent Resident Card) or Canadian immigration stamp on your passport;

Do you have a copy of your original landing document? If you don't, you can obtain a copy from the Citizenship and Immigration Office.

With regards to the residency proof, it states:

OF RESIDENCE HISTORY (Refer to question 14 on the application)
If you have not lived in Canada all your life, you must send us certified photocopies of documents that prove your history of residence in Canada. You can use the following documents to prove when you entered, departed or returned to Canada:

passports;
immigration records (such as visas);
customs declarations; or
other approved documents that can prove your history of residence in Canada.

I would call them and ask what other documents can prove your history of residence in Canada.. but my suggestions would be:

Landed Immigrant Visa
Home ownership records / property tax records

Proof of Taxes paid
Canada Pension Plan Statement of Contributions http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/i.../socinfo.shtml

Yes i have my original landed immigrant slip which was stamped and my Canadian cityzen card,but they still want proof of the 3 years i wasnt here,dosent realy make sence as theres nothing to be gained financialy,it would be just not counted towards pension years.
