Patriotism

Having read the thread re "Is Canada home?" got me to thinking....assuming you are an emigrant to another country - who do you support when the Olympics are on? Do you feel a great surge of patriotic pride for your country of origin, or do you shout for your adopted country?

In the winter olympics its unusual for there to be a conflict of interest:)

In soccer, there is no conflict of interest either

You will only ever see canadians in the (canadian) Summer olympic TV coverage anyway, so it doesnt much matter what the brits do, you would never know. If its a US chanel, then its all about the US atheletes/team and their families...really quite nauseatingly so.

Rugby would be a bit one sided

The only time there is likely to be a problem is rowing...

I chear them both on, its not like it makes a difference anyway.

If I'm watching a US channel I cheer for the not-American. If a Canadian channel the not-Canadian. I'm always wrong.

The first "official" international cricket match took place in 1844. Guess who the teams were?

US and Canada or whatever it was called then? The decline of cricket in the US was largley due to racist issues around the rurn of the century, and baseball filled the void. But americans dont care... there was an interesting bit on it in the Guardian once.

Sadly given the state of the English national team that ain't neccessarily so.....

You have the right of it generally though. I struggle to think of a sport where I'd have to choose sides.

Summer olympics, world cup dressage etc I am rooting for whom is my favorite rider regardless of nationality.

Same for figure skating in the winter olympics. The Duchesnay icedance pair just happened to be french canadian although competing for France.

You don't find curling interesting? Hmmmmmmm. That's not very patriotic.

Curling is the epitome of Canadian sport. It's gender-neutral, clean, safe, non-violent and involves ice.

Yes, and given that the Olympic gold was won by a Newfoundland led rink I should be excited by it. Sadly I am not. Brad Gushue I met once and although he is somewhat a local superstar I was underwhelmed. Still, Team Gushue did get a road named after them - 'The Team Gushue highway' which is slightly more interesting than it's previous name of 'The Birfucation highway'.
