Also think you have to be bi-lingual, as in fluent in French.

Do you not have to go to College/Uni for this, now.
The differences are to vast I would imagine

That's right - any federal job demands you be bi-lingual.

Nope, not necessary to be bi-lingual. Depends on the job and the province

Alright - many.

Most decent federal public service sector jobs require language proficiancy in both official languages.

Depends on how you define decent.

For the most part outside of Quebec and the Ottawa area being bilingual by and large is not a requirement in federal civil service jobs.

I'm thinking of the people I know working in in Federal jobs.....my late father in law (senior engineer with DFO) couldn't and wouldn't speak french....friends who work for the NRC don't need to....sister in laws, ex in Ottawa doesn't, although the Feds are paying for him to learn french.

Certainly being bilingual might be an advantage when seeking a Federal job, however it's unlikely to outweigh the 'not being a Canadian citizen' bit.

Often being bi-lingual is necessary for 1 in 4 federal positions.

Did some research, rather than speaking in general terms:

23.9% of federal employment positions are "bilingual imperative."

Yes, but to point out the obvious, 23.9% isn't "all". e.g. One member of my research group has just landed a rather senior job with Environment Canada in Vancouver, and another, more junior member, with EC in Toronto. Neither speak a word of French. (The first is from Athabasca and the second from Newfoundland). They're both unhyphenated.

So not 'all' Federal jobs, nor 'many' or indeed 'most'. Rather some, roughly a quarter of all Federal jobs, absolutely require bi-lingualism? I suspect if you broke down that 23.9%, many of those would be in Quebec or New Brunswick? Wonder what percentage of jobs in 'English Speaking' Canada actually require bi-lingualism?

There are lots of federal acts you have to become familiar with. Members of the RCMP by default as federal law enforcement officers have powers under every federal act and can act as quasi wildlife, fisheries and even immigration officers. We had to study some really obscure acts in training such as the migatory birds act! Fortunately I haven't had to do anything with that one.

I initially misread that comma as a full stop! RCMP can act as quasi wildlfe

Still, that explains why it was you guys that brought that boat in the other day.
