Question Park ranger jobs

Hei

My partner is at college, and when he has finished he will be qualified to become a park ranger.

Who would we need to contact about park ranger jobs etc?

I'm only guessing but if it were me i'd start at the National Parks Canada and go from there.

Good luck,

Gav.

For Federal (Parks Canada) jobs, the likelyhood of getting one if you are not a Canadian citizen is remote. (See the Canada Border Services thread.) There will also be provincial jobs so google [Province] & Park Ranger.

Parks Canada, but you would have to have residency to be considered and most likley a Canadian citizen. Park Wardens in Canada are law enforcement officers, guns and all!

I think it is completely different to the UK, I am not trying to insult you I am sure you are aware of the difference in size and the animals.
But it is the armed part that is the key fact
Iam sure you will find it is very difficult to get employment in this area.
There may be other jobs in this industry that he may be available and may then lead on to a park ranger?
Good luck anyway!

Don't they tell him at the college? It's running a park ranger programme. Most colleges have something called a "career" office! His teachers, who are teaching how to become a park ranger must know something, even a teeny weeny smidgen about the job

And since he's a college grad - or soon to be - he could use "google."

I understood that Park Wardens were law enforcement officers, but were not provided with weapons (at least, law enforcement-type weapons). A 9-year dispute between Parks Canada and some wardens who wanted weapons has culminated in a split: a small number of wardens will remain wardens, and will be armed; the rest will become some other kind of employee, stripped of law enforcement responsibilities. Apparently many of the current wardens wouldn't qualify as new wardens anyway. It's caused quite a fuss. There was an article in the Canadian Geographic a while back.

Ontario Ministry of Natural Resource Enforcement officers have guns. They can arrest people. They also have to know about Canadian wildlife/ nature/laws/indigenous peoples.

I would guess that a qualification from a British college would be worth diddly squat in getting a job with them

As has been previously mentioned. Google is your friend.

They all used to be armed, and Parks Canada have disarmed many of them and relegated them to lesser jobs.

It's very hard to get in, even if you've been a park ranger in another country.

My sister-in-law is a senior bureaucrat with Parks Canada. She's just told me that it would be nigh impossivle for someone without Canadian wildlife/forestry/fauna/history knowledge to be hired.

Apart from telling a moose and bears apart and spotting trees on fire what skills do you actually need?

Apart from fire fighting, law enforcement against armed poachers, saving skiers and climbers who have gotten themselves into trouble, nuisance bear control, various environmental and conservation, and species protection roles, making and maintaining trails and pathways, controlled burns to delay/avoid forest fires, pest control, often from the back of a horse.... not much!

You forgot avalanche control and dealing with rowdy tourists.

Bear wrestling can be useful.
