For Info Only

Last year I took 2 sets if visitors back to DTW to fly back to the UK after a 2 week vacation here with us in Canada, both sets had ESTA's first set we drove back across the border in April were pulled in for I94 visa waivers to then be taken away from them at the airport, the 2nd set in July let our visitors enter the US with out I94's on the ESTA's only. So altho an ESTA is just a number, its is a printable document and can be shown at land border crossings and can be used to enter the US.

If your on a UK passport then you need to complete a visa waiver at the border control. Easy and fairly painless, cost I think $6 usd and only takes as long as the queue.

Must say our border crossings have been really stress free.

$6 US and fill in a form, then fnger prints and retina scan, can take upto an hour or so. Visa is good for 90 days, but one is supposed to turn it in when coming back into Canada.
If you fly into the states you need a ESTA form prior to reaching the airport, cost is $14.You will not get on the plane without a number, you have been warned.

Thanks for this, finally a straight answer! Sounds very much like the green cards we had to get. ESTA is new info. :)

 I just remember that the cards we had to get when going over in the big truck were green, cost about the same and we had to do the fingerprint thing, no retina scan that I remember but that was 2 years ago.
