I never had to do any residential schools for my OU Psych courses, AFAIR ,that may have changed though. I did do two residential schools for my unrelated Level 1's though. How great is residential school!!!!!!

Yes you're quite right there are alternatives to the residential school and you can certainly still pass but you do miss out on a good week with workshops/lectures/seminars from visiting Uni Professors.

Hi, I am just about finished my conversion course in psychology with the OU. I thought it best to do that, then apply for BPS registration before getting everything evaluated - but then I was closer to the end of the course. I'm heading to NS and have spoken to the local examiners board who deal with certification. What I need to do is have my qualifications evaluated in Toronto and they then assess what level I'm at. If I want to qualify as a psychologist in UK I'd only need to do a three year trainee post but at the same stage in NS it looks like I'll perhaps need to do a 5 year minimum PhD - don't know that I'm up for that! It'd be good to keep in touch about this though - feel free to send a PM.

have spoken to an OU advisor abotu the course and for the compulsory level 2 stuff there si a residential but you can also take the same course online so i have no need to be there ( and with a disabled child to care for id like to see them try and force me to go residential...) plausibly i could be here for another year academically at least, so i think ill keep on with the course and see where it takes me.

thank you all for your advice, i will deffo comtact the local uni when/if we ever decide where in BC we are going ?dh can get a job/ we get a visa

Just another thing - throughout my OU course I have opted to do ALEs (Alternative Learning Experince) instead of residential schools and have found them great - it's almost impossible for me to attend residential school and they've never given me any trouble about this.

Best of luck!

Although my OU degree was not in psychology, I had it (along with all my other qualifications) assessed by the IQAS in Alberta, for the princely sum of $125, who declared that it 'generally compares to the completion of a four-year Bachelor of Science degree...' in Canada.

It took them 10 weeks to provide me with that though, so be prepared to wait

so basically, has anyone with an OU degree encountered resistance in canada, would it be easier to complete the current year study ( and poss next year if visa takes a while) then use hose two years as entry level for completeing the degree in canada, or do i stick with UK study even in canada and then apply for equivalency for the post grad?

thanks
my OU degree never raised an eyebrow, but that may be an odd situation, as I have postgrad on top.

having said that they never ask for the classification here!

I think the issue, though, is whether the regulatory body of the profession would accept.

It depends, but mostly yes, with the above advisements.

Are you moving to Canada permanently? If so, I'd transfer your first year courses to a local uni here. If not, be in absentia for a year or two if they allow that, then go back and finish.

If you are thinking of doing a PhD in North America, be advised the institutions like to stretch the time out to at least three to four years. Some take even longer.
