ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS FOR BRITISH PASSPORT?
 

Hi

I live in Canada and have a British Passport over 10 years old and did have dual citizenship and have to re-applyfor my British Passport as a first time new applicant. I have original Birth Certificates (UK), Marriage certificates, etc and they are very, very precious to me and I don't want to lose them. Can I get certified copies of these somewhere (if so, where???) that will be recognized and accepted for British Passport Application. I have been online for hours searching.

Or, are they good at sending back these important documents. I would really like to order these because I am afraid they won't return my originals and I will lose them.

I guess this is as good a place as any. I took the liberty of renaming the thread.

Dont know the answer. I have a blind faith in Authority... Id just send the originals myself.

The website seems pretty explicit about what you can send copies of, and what has to be the original.

I hadnt realised that if your passport is more than ten years old then you need to start again from scratch.

Perhaps this will provide some reassurance: It seems pretty easy to order a replacement birth or marriage cert. from the UK govt for a modest fee if by some mischance the passport people lose yours!

Contact the birth/marriage registry for copies. Obtain these before you send off originals.

Because I was at work, when my passport and original documents were returned from Washington to Canada, the courier company left the package with a neighbour. It was accepted and signed for by their teenage son who provided no identification and promptly misplaced it. The courier company used (UPS) assured me that it was acceptable for their drivers to leave letters/parcels with neighbours if a person is not at home.

For a fee (you have to provide your credit card details first), you can phone the passport help line in Scotland. They knew who had accepted the passport and this is how I traced it. When I expressed my concern with the consul, I was merely ignored. No wonder identity theft is on the increase. I just hope you have good neighbours.
