Optimum temperature

What do you guys recommend as the ideal temperature for the house when you're not home? I'm thinking in terms of energy efficiency, what's good for the house, what's ideal for the furnace etc..

I have an oil fired furnace in the basement (forced air).

I sneak the temp up if we are just sitting around watching tv. its still chilly otherwise even with a throw.

Our thermostat came out of the box with 16 as the weekday daytime temperature when we are supposed to be at work. However my wife is at home during the day and has it at 22 - 24...........think i need to have words with her!
