I know that others have posted about emmigration expo's but just would like some feedback on the following one. If anyone has gone to one of their previous ones.

Hi, I was wondering about going to this expo as well as my husband and I have finally decided to go for this as after much deliberation - any suggestions would be gratefull received

I've never lived in the UK, and I've never been to an emigration show.

Several members of this forum have expressed disappointment with these kinds of exhibitions. They've stated that they would have been okay for someone who knew absolutely nothing about emigration. However, they provided little, if any, additional information to a student of the British Expats Wiki.

But, with that having been said, I recall a couple of instances in which forum members received job offers at one of those emigration shows. I guess it depends on your particular occupation and whether or not there is an exhibitor who is looking for your specific skill set.

Still, if you do choose to attend the Expo, I recommend setting out with low expectations. Then you won't be disappointed. If all goes well, you may even be pleasantly surprised.

Hi,

Jury is probably out on these exhibits as they are new - at least for the Canadian market. Opportunities Canada differs from the Emigrate shows in that a) it is new and b) it aims to put employers together with potential employees. So depending on your skills and the employers there you could be in luck.

My understanding is that getting into Canada is getting longer and longer unless you have a job. If you want to get here then investing some time and some money in this kind of show might get you into Canada a lot quicker. So why not come with the intention of making the most of it, taking your CV (lots of copies) and list of questions you want answered. People do get jobs this way and the employers are not going to invest in this kind of exhibition unless they seriously want to find staff.

Canada Karen,not knowing what your professions are I would say this will be nothing more than a dip of your pocket. Search the site for comments on the last event and i think you will find a lot of annoyed people. Also you may find people with free tickets as they gave away a load to people who complained. I have already given mine away as i wouldnt go back if it was in my back garden and free.

Judy is right some people got job offers but after taking the wives cv, for nursing, there was no one to give it to as Calgary healthcare were giving advice only which i already knew ie apply to CARNA and the other was an agency sign up with us and we will do everything, they forgot to mentioned once you signed with them you were tied in with them.

Also if you plan to move to alberta there was stands from their, Ontario had a tiny stall, queue went for miles and there was nothing for rest of the country. Again "come over we have plenty of jobs" but no hard facts.

To be honest save your money we went thinking it was better to go and see instead of thinking what we may have missed. Believe me it wasnt worth it i could have used the time doing something better instead.

I just read both those threads and noticed on the first one replies from Wardrop and a lady from working in.

The lady Faye, says that the next one will be bigger and better as the previous ones were the first, and that they will try and do all the things mentioned by people that attended the first ones.

My hubby and I are going to go, a last ditch attempt by us to see if we can do it or not, given our eldest boys Aspergers, we are hoping to get some answers whilst we are there.

We are flying down from scotland, it is expensive, but we are also using it as a good excuse to get a good weekend away from the kids in London and catch up with relatives, so for us it won't be a wasted trip if it does turn out to be pants :p

I will update when we have been about how it really was.

I think you should only attend it you think you have an occupation that is needed at the show and that it does not cost you too much to attend. Have low expectations and if you leave with anything then count yourself lucky.

Thanks Helen. Hubby is a Gas Fitter so is an occupation in demand in some places.

As I say this is our last go at it, we are hoping that someone will be able to give us some definitive answers re the eldest boy, we will take CV's with us, but no children so should be able to speak to people without interruption!!

And, at the end of the day we will be able to do our christmas shopping and have a meal and maybe even take in a show, bliss! Especially as it will be our first weekend away on our own for 10 years!! :thumbsup: So not wasted as far as we are concerned!

Hi,

My wife and myself are intending to go to this show. Going to the Leeds one, only down the road. Interesting comments about the quality of this show. We are both in IT and looking to move to Canada asap. We dont really know where abouts we want to go, and so were hoping this expo would help us.

Not so sure now :(

Hi

Is that true that if you signed with Calgary Health Region you are stuck forever with them. I have signed with them last year and I am soon leaving to join them by the end of the year.

I am worried now. Please can you elaborate more on it. Thanks in advance.

I think md5037 was referring to a nursing recruitment agency that one would be stuck with. Mind you, I didn't see "forever" written anywhere.

Calgary Health Region is an employer, not a recruitment agency.

I think if you go back and read md5037's post again, you'll find that two different entities were being discussed in one sentence.
