open return ticket
Hi,
hopefully flying to Winnipeg around the end of march,LMO in hand & applying for WP when i land. Couple of worries are price of ticket & luggage allowance.
I'll be taking 2 suitcases(work clothing,winter/summer clothes etc.) and my tools, toolbox weighs 16kg on its own plus the cases & it'll be a hefty weight of luggage.
Only flown travelling light before on holiday with 25-30ish kilo weight restrictions so is there anyone here who has done the same & can advise me?
Heading into town now to price up a flight but thought I'd post on here cos I'd like to shop around & not get stiffed on the price, thanks

Re: open return ticket
not like i'm going for a 2 week holiday but not enough to fill up a tea chest for shipping,
guess I'll price up the costs of shipping v replacement
anybody know a company that ships very small containers?

You can do a couple of other things which are often cheaper than using shipping companies for small loads.
1st - Have a look at your airline's pricing for extra baggage. With BA if you book in advance online you can take an extra bag upto 32kg before November for £60. Asking at the airport is £75 I believe.

2nd - Airlines again; they often offer unaccompanied baggage services. Same as above really except you're not dragging it around and it may not end up on the same flight as you. I think it priced up at around £100 for similar amounts to the above.

A quick google on 'baggage allowances' for your airline should give you similar info for everyone else.

Re: open return ticket
The cheapest you are going to get is with air is if it is going as excess baggage the same flight as you. Once you get into freight, this is where the airlines make money. You will also need to clear it through customs as freight, and pick it up from the freight handler, although there may be no tax to pay, you would likely have to pay a broker to clear it for you, unless you want to try and do this yourself. Any freight, ocean or air will need customs clearance, if it is with you it all gets done at once and you can do it yourself when you land.
We use BA and Lufthansa, both are pretty good. Used Air Canada three times they got it wrong all three times and did not seem at all bothered.

thanks all,
I'll look into the excess baggage side of it as i can replace my whole toolkit for around £120 english prices, most of my handtools are american-made so can probably be bought cheaper there.
Thats the heaviest thing i'll be carrying & had already contemplated that scenario, glad i'm a bricklayer not a carpenter,it would cost me hundreds
