Default One-way travel insurance

We are finally moving to Ontario at the end of the month, after a more than four-month delay due to Covid.

We have health insurance to cover the first three months in Canada before we're eligible for OHIP, but what about 'regular' travel insurance for the journey for lost luggage etc?

When booking standard travel insurance for a holiday you obviously have to specify a return date, but we won't have one. Do we need special 'one-way' insurance because of our inability to give a return date?

I suggest making a few calls tomorrow or using the power of the Google. Perhaps someone on this site has experience of this but might be a few days before they reply or knowing my luck within 5 minutes after I have posted this.

@crofty82 just a heads up, Ontario are currently waiving the usual 3 month wait period for OHIP. Any newcomer will have immediate access to health services should they need them. We found this out when we landed last month Worth keeping an eye on it though in case they change this back.

Slightly related question, I hope it’s OK.

We are off to New Brunswick in a few weeks with PR. We know that they have no waiting time for their Medicare. How does it work if medical care was needed before we physically got our Medicare cards? Is COPR all that would be needed?

I would be asking for a receipt or something when you register for NB Health just in case something happens but you wouldn't be covered from landing at designated airport and in transit to NB.

So in Ontario, you call OHIP when you land which essentially “activates” you on the system until you can physically go in with your documents to sign up properly. If you need any medical care I presume you take your visa documents, in our case it would be PR cards.

No, sorry but none of that is correct.

Suggest you have a read of the wiki for Ontario here: https://britishexpats.com/wiki/Medic...Canada#Ontario

.....and follow the links to the official OHIP site. You must physically apply in person with the required proofs at any Services Ontario office.

Yes that would be the process normally....... however, under the COVID 19 relaxed regulations it's possible to call them to start the registration, temporarily, it appears.

If you are self-isolating and cannot go to ServiceOntario to register for coverage, please contact ServiceOntario INFOline at 1-866-532-3161. INFOline staff will advise on next steps as appropriate. You will be registered for immediate OHIP coverage and provided with a transaction record to use to demonstrate your eligibility for OHIP until your health card arrives in the mail.
