Re: OMG Canadian Affair Luggage allowance
Hi there,
We flew BA in May. We were allowed 2 cases each plus 2 pieces of hand luggage each. The 2 cases were allowed to be 23kg each however if they were between 23-32kg (legal limit for weight is now 32kg due to health and safety) then we had to pay £25 per bag that was over. There was also no limit to the weight of hand luggage, as long as you could safely lift it above your head. Plus we were also allowed a piece of sports baggage each for free.
So we took with us 4 bags (3 at 31.5kg 1 at 25kg) a golf bag (with my dogs bed stuffed inside, a hockey bag with all the kit plus 2 pairs of roller blades and 3 pairs of ice skates. Then as our hand luggage, one small hand luggage sized suitcase (that weighed about 17kg!!) a small 'handbag' stuffed with all the bits that didn't fit in our suitcases, a laptop with all the cables, external hard drive, web cam etc, then a large bag full of everything else.
We arrived at the airport early and made use of their re-packing area with the scales etc and checked all our bags.
When we got to the check in desk she asked if we were emigrating (to Australia!!) we pointed out the hockey kit!! She made a comment about how well our bags were packed (the 3 of them were about 0.5kg under the legal limit!!!) then asked if we had hand luggage, (she didn't weight them) them handed us our boarding cards and directed us off to drop off our (oversized) sports equipment. We were expecting to pay £100 for the 4 cases as they were over the 23kg, but she never asked us for it!!!!
I think that the check in staff have discretion for the charges but to be fair £100 wouldn't have been that bad considering how much we actually took.
We had to book return flights because we've come out on bunac visas but we are applying for PR and yet we still feel we got value for money with BA.
It may be better to book a slightly more expensive flight with a larger allowance then getting caught out with excess baggage?

I also posted a lot of my belongings with FedEx (25kg on Parcel2Go is about £80) so overall I'm only spending just over £300 for me and all my stuff which isn't bad. I guess it's just as well that I don't own a lot

Re: OMG Canadian Affair Luggage allowance
Hi there,
I recently flew Gatwick / Halifax and had a similar experience (although I am a single traveller and consequently travel very lightly). I believe that if you upgrade the luggage allowance is increased to an additional 10kg. It states on the website upgrades are available one way per person. However they phoned me a day or two before my flight and offered me an upgrade for much less. I think it was £30 each way.
Anyway it is still much cheaper than flying BA or Air Canada etc.
I thought it was a fantastic flight. It left on time, good times, pleasant service and only took 6 hours there and 5hours 20 back.
Good luck.
Ben

Well my flight to Vancouver was £233, even with say £200 of extra fees, thats still miles away from the next price up on expedia which was £800 with Air Canada iirc. So in this case it's not really better to book a more expensive flight.

When we came over permanently a couple of weeks ago we had one suit case that was 29 KG the other was 25KG we were willing to pay the extra, but the lady never said a word. That was from Birmingham with Thomas Cook.

Re: OMG Canadian Affair Luggage allowance
Just got back from 10 days in Kingston, ON, through CA to Toronto.
Airtransat out and thomas cook back - we were over by 3 kilos there - and 5 back - had to repack into hand luggage or pay the excess. Quite helpful but no way were they going to let us through, even tho the flights weren't full.
They have defiantly tightened up from previous years!
The 3 kilos out were a fishing rod - so this went as sporting equipment free!
