OK - bedding .... again .... sorry !

OK folks - where can I buy fitted sheets that are not part of a sheet set?!

I don't want a fitted sheet and a flat sheet and two pillowcases that seem to be everywhere (in a rather extornionate pack).

We use duvets. I can buy duvet covers I like - why can't I find a small packet with just one fitted sheet in it ?!

I need a couple of new single (twin) sheets for kids beds and a new king size for my fabulous new king size that arrives of Friday (yay - going to need to book an appointment to meet up with hubby in the middle as it is soooo big ) . Anyway, back to my question - I don't want a cupboard full of flat sheets !

Did try to search elsewhere, but failed miserably .... thanks

Sears, Winners, Zellers should all be able to help. Ikea too

You CAN find individual fitted sheets. Look at:
  • Linens 'n Things at 3630 Brentwood Road NW
  • Sears
  • The Bay

Do you ask clerks when you're in stores, or do you just search in vain on your own? I know that clerks are hard to find, especially in department stores, but it's worth persevering and finding one if you really want something specific. Specialty stores, like Linens 'n Things, tend to be better staffed than department stores.

Another strategy that I find useful is that, if a given store doesn't carry a product I'm looking for, I ask the clerk if he/she knows where I might be able to find the product. I find that they're usually quite helpful in suggesting alternative sources.

Another option is mail order, e.g., Lands' End. It's not cheap, but it's good quality and lasts forever.

I don't know why you don't want to use top sheets, though. We have duvets, and we still use top sheets. That way, I only have to launder the duvet covers once in a blue moon. I find it much quicker and easier to launder a top sheet than to take a cover off a duvet and put it back on again. I used to use duvets without top sheets in the past. After a while I got tired of taking the covers off and replacing them, so I reverted to the old fashioned top sheet idea.

If you're willing to settle for the sets, then your options will open up. Then you'll be able to look at Winners, Zellers, Costco, and so on. I think you'll find that some of these cheaper places will sell sets for the same price that an individual fitted sheet costs at some of the more expensive places.

Another place that might be worth a try, especially if you are going there for other reasons anyway, is IKEA.

Me too. I no longer have the strength and patience to fight with putting on a new duvet cover every time I change the bedding.

Just go to Ikea, they are the furniture saviour for us here, most stuff we have is from there.

First, they drive me nuts during the night as they become entangled around my legs - I'm a hot thing (:p) and forever kicking bedding off. It's also just one more layer to sort out and straighten out when making a bed - reminds me of hotel beds which always look like a dogs dinner every morning and I can never be bothered !!!! One duvet is fine, thank you. Easy !

Time to search again ... damn, more shopping .... ;)

I cant believe The Bay is ever going to be the cheapest option, even during a sale.

I guess it depends if you are hung up on a particular brand though. Winners often has excellent quality stuff for prices down around the cost in Zellers for much less nice stuff, but of course you never know what they are going to have.

Ikea is alright if you have one nearby, Our King duvet covers came from there as I recall. The sheets we got at the same time have long since gone threadbare.

JYSK sell individual sheets too, not sure on the quality but I have just bought some pillowcases from there and they had zips on the open end so the pillow doesn't fall out which I thought was pretty cool.

With duvets they are supposed to keep you warm by reflecting your bodyheat back down to you so the more sheets etc you have in the way the less effective they are - or that is what I was told when I was a mere pleb at the Belfast Linen Warehouse @ age 17 (I've had some top jobs:ohmy:).

Saying that we do now use a sheet as the only thing we could find that we liked was a comforter set that is dry clean only and it's so warm in the summer we just want a sheet.

Duvets work by traping air...a sheet just adds another trapped layer. No reflecting of anything, these arent those shiny bacofoil emergency blankets;) My wife has conmverted me to the undersheet idea....anything else just seems kind of dirty to me now. Too hot in the summer for anything other than just a sheet anyway.

In the UK IKEA bed sizes are different that in other stores so their fitted bedding doesn't always fit beds bought elsewhere. Is this different in Canada?

You're supposed to turn on the air conditioning to solve that issue.;)

Bed sizes in canada are the north american ones. Beds/ bedding brought over from the UK will not necessarily be interchangable.

When IKEA first opened in North America, their bed sizes (and their bed linens too, of course) were different from NA bed sizes. Consequently, if you bought an IKEA bed, you were tied to IKEA bed linens forever.

However, some years down the line (I forget exactly when), they changed the sizes of the beds that they sold in their NA stores to be compatible with NA bed sizes.

OK, sorry to jump in on the thread BUT what is with all the different sizes for queen duvets and duvet covers?????

I went to Linens N' Things and the queen duvets in stock were about 3 different sizes, and the duvet covers they stocked didn't actually correspond to ANY of those sizes. What, why???

:confused::confused::confused:

Yep, absolutely bonkers. And they sell you mattresses that are SO deep you need a stepladder to climb into bed and then none of the king-sized fitted sheets will actually stretch over them and tuck underneath. And why oh why are there so many different sized pillows and cushions - none of which fit any known size of pillowcase. Don't even get me started on Ikea.... :curse:

If you have a deep matress, you have to remember to buy the deep fit sheets. Its not difficult, and even zellers sell them...

In theory... but we're fussy. And when the mattress is 18" deep (or more) on a king-size the range of bed linens is not great. We tried all kinds of stores across Calgary (Sears, the Bay, Linens 'n Things, Bed n Bath, Zellers, Walmart, Ikea... I could go on) and could not find one single matching set (i.e. undersheet, oversheet, quilt cover and/or comforter, plus pillow/cushion cases) - at least not in an acceptable plain colour, not even white.

Then there were the aforementioned pillow problems - if we could find the sheets to match a duvet cover (or a comforter) we couldn't find matching pillow cases in the several sizes needed (yep we fell for that store display option of having king-sized plus regular-sized pillows plus square cushions).

Fortunately my sister-in-law had spares of everything so we borrowed her stuff the first trip, then brought bedding with us from UK the second trip (superkingsize in John Lewis fits a NA kingsize bed 6ft wide just fine; and JL kingsize fits the queen which is essentially a 5ft wide). I have yet to find or make covers to fit that fine set of multi-sized pillows that came with our kingsize bed so they lurk unused on the top shelf of our closet.
