OHIP timeline

Hey there,

Now that I have a Permanent Resident's Visa, how long do I have to wait for OHIP? Do I apply straight away?

How does OHIP differ majorly from the NHS coverage?

Apply straightaway, but you have to wait 3 months for it to kick in

Some examples of the differences.
  • No dental, not even wisdom teeth
  • You pay for all meds unless given while you are an inpatient or in emerge
  • no outpatient physio unless it's following on from an inpatient stay
  • You need to show your OHIP card at every visit otherwise you will be billed, You can then claim this back from OHIP
  • Federal government decides the minimum level of healthcare that must be provided by the province. The province then decides what they will fund on top of that. It's illegal for anyone to ask you to pay for a service that is provided under OHIP.
  • If you break a bone and need a cast you get a plaster of Paris one on OHIP but can pay to have a fibreglass one. You can pay extra to have a walking boot, buy crutches, walking sticks etc
