OHIP question
 

Hello all.....our OHIP kicks in on Oct 5th and until then we're with Canadasure. When registering with a family doctor the fee is $50 per person. Are we eligible to claim that back from either Canadasure or OHIP when it kicks in?

We'll get medical cover through my OH's employment (he starts next Tuesday) but that's after a three month probation period. Can it be claimed back from them after the three months if the other options don't work?

A $50 registration fee???? First I've heard of that! Is this the GP's office telling you this? If so I think you might want to consult OHIP directly to see if they are even allowed to do this.

You do not get full medical coverage from an employer. You receive supplementary coverage for dental/private rooms, opticals and some other benefits. I also don't understand the $50 per head fee for being permitted to join the practice. I've been here a long time and never heard of such a thing.
I doubt you'll be able to claim these fees back.

Well that's odd......hmmmmm......


I'll have to give them a call to see what they mean....maybe I misheard but she said she would print off an invoice for each of us (3) but we may like to wait until OH starts work in case he can claim the fees back.

I shall have a look into it and report back.....

when i signed up to my gp (i'm not on ohip either) there was definitely no registration fee. However, an appointment costs $50. Perhaps it's the cost of the initial checkup? I didnt register until till i needed to see the doctor to get birth control and did that and the initial checkup in 1 appointment for $50. They just weighed me and took my height to measure BMI and measured my blood pressure.

Actually, thinking about it.....I think I may have got the wrong end of the stick...maybe. There are three of us, we gave the receptionist our names, addresses etc. Then she suggested that just I go in to see the doc as this would save us paying for my OH and DS. So, do we pay $50 for each doc visit? If yes, do we claim that back on OHIP?

Sorry, I posted at just about the same time as you! So that's it then, you pay $50 for each appointment, right? Do you then claim that back?

I've never heard of a doctor charging to join, maybe its what they will charge you until OHIP kicks in?


I am moving to Ontario, and BC MSP will provide coverage for me for the remaining month of my move + 2 months, my question is, if I see a doctor in Ontario before OHIP kicks in, will the doctor bill MSP direct or will I have to pay and then get reimbursed by MSP?

I've never gone to a doctor out of province, so not sure how it works.

This is because you are not on OHIP. So wait til you are on OHIP then register.

You can't claim anything back from OHIP unless money has been paid out after your start date and you did not have the relevant number/card

The registration software has a method of keying in your out of province details so I am pretty sure they bill goes to MSP direct.
