OHIP and hypothyroidism

My lady has hypothyroidism and is treated with 75mg daily of thyroxine.

Once we are covered by OHIP, what is the deal? In the UK as it is a lifelong chronic condition, there are no prescription charges and the drugs are included on the NHS.

What is the deal on OHIP please (search showed stuff about BC - perhaps ON is different)??

My daughter suffers from the same - takes synthroid daily which I think is the same. She pays something for her medication - but I can't recall how much, but it was partially covered by insurance, so it doesn't sound like it's sorted the same way as in the UK. I'm presuming someone (pharmacist/doctor) would have mentioned it to us here, if it was the case.

As it is a prescription, she will have to pay for it. No free prescriptions here as in the UK, unless you are very low income.

I took that in the UK and, as the other poster has said, it is called Synthroid here. For 3 months coverage it costs me about $7. I have 80% coverage with health insurance.

Re: OHIP and hypothyroidism

It costs 9c per pill in BC plus say 3months dispensing fee $10 should total about $20..for three months ballpark- Hopefully similar over there.

If people are interested in looking at the costs of their meds, particularly BC, have a look at pharmacy compass.ca - this shows you how much a pill costs in each pharmacy plus gives an idea of the dispensing fee so you can shop around

Thats fine thanks. Just wanted to get a picture. Those charges are pretty piffling in the scheme of things.....

Thanks for the link. We don't have employee insurance but we do have US healthcare insurance which covers our meds...but it means driving over the border to collect them. The prices quoted on the website seem very reasonable. I put our Toronto location in the website...I presume the prices are for this area. Hubby takes the same drug...9c each plus $4.45 dispensing fee from Costco is a steal.

Which tallies with the figures I gave above, presumably you paying 20% and have extended benefits...

I have a drugs plan not sure what the cost would be without it.

I reckon a ballpark of Post #4 would be about right ;)
