Off to Alberta in Jan- Waht to take/ get
 

Wondered if anyone can help us. We are moving toAlberta in Jan. We are only planning to take our clothes with us, but were wondering if there are any essentials that we should either get/ organise before we go or get as son as we land? Obviously it's going to be cold in Jan, but really unsure as to what to take.

Please advise regarding

clothes
paperwork to bring/ get etc

take marmite, cadbury's chocolate, tesco's red label tea bags, revels, bisto's gravy powder, english marmalade, rich tea biscuits......even if you don't like these things, other brits do and it's possible to swap, sell these items and you'll make lots of 'instant new friends'.......:thumbsup: enjoy.....

You can buy many of those things in regular supermarkets here (highlighted). Finding English style tea isn't difficult, nor is gravy powder/granules.

But they cost a heck of a lot more here than they do in the UK... and I for one object to paying a small fortune for a teeny tiny jar of marmite!

I have a friend who regularly sends me food parcels (Marmite, chocolate, Walkers ready salted crisps, jaffa cakes and more). In return I knit for her and her children - hey it works for us :D

I've no idea about the cost as I don't buy them, but surely after international postage, they're can't still be more expensive locally?

Swapping for a toque seems a fair deal though :)

BTW, is there really a noticeable difference between Walkers and Lays?

Definitely Sunglasses. I arrived in February and couldn't believe how bright it was, almost the first thing I had to buy over here....You may also want to plan to buy winter coats over here too, we found our UK ones weren't really up to it !! :ohmy:

What chocolate are you talking about?....Everywhere I look I see crappy milk chocolate - twix, Mars bars etc. Costco sells Dairy Milk etc...Yuck!!!!

Also, Walmart and Superstore sell huge boxes of Tetley Tea for about $7.50. Can't be that much more expensive than in the UK surely?

I would just fill my case with warm clothes!!!!!

Most of the Cadbury's sold here is Canadian, made in Toronto, and it is NOT the same. Super Drug Mart in Crowfoot does get shipments of real imported Cadbury's chocolate in humungous bars that cost quite a lot,(?)... mostly around Christmas..... I can eat a whole one, but not at one sitting!:p

Regarding a warm coat, the one I brought with me, from BHS, I have found quite adequate, so long as there is room for a long sleeved shirt and a fleece underneath. The real trick is to dress in layers and to make sure there is a wind-proof, water-resistant layer on the outside.

BTW, Jeans are CRAP in cold weather!

You will probably need to buy snow-boots here, with nice thick soles, if you are planning on spending time at bus stops etc...... And proper gloves and a hat.
I always have trouble, in the really cold weather, covering my face, cos if I pull my scarf over my nose and mouth my glases steam up and then ice over! :blink:

You want as little skin exposed as possible when the temperature is -20 or lower! :eek:

Thanks for all this advic- it's so helpful. Is there any paperwork we should aim to bring with us- medical recored/ no claims cert for car insurance etc?

AS much paperwork as possible. I know others will argue about the validity\use of UK paperwork but it COULD save you money somewhere.
