Re: Nursing

I think it depends on which province you are going to. BC, for instance, accepts diploma in general and psychiatric nursing. Ontario on the other hand would need you to have a degree. If you have not got one they would expect you to get it within 5 years period. You need to log on to any provincial nursing licencing body web site and research that.

There are some simple steps to do that. Hope that helps. :)

Re: Nursing

Reaf the WIKI on Nursing in Canada http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Nursing-Canada as it gives a good overview of the process and requirements.

The Nursing section on here tends to be populated largely by people going to Australia, but you do get info on Canada now and again. Questions may get answered a bit quicker on the Canada forum.

For other info try the Canada forum of www.allnurses.com

Which Province are you thinking of going to?

Hi
We were thinking of going to alberta but would go anywhere really. The prob is as well i don't qualify for another 2 years and things could have changed altogether by then. I just hope there will be still a shortage of nurses and i'll be ok but who knows. Just don't want to go through my training and then it be no good.
Cheers
Michelle.

Re: Nursing

They will still need nurses then, no worries there.

You should get a couple of years experience after you qualify though. Employers have to demonstrate that they have advertised a post and cannot fill it with a Canadian.

This would be hard to do when newly qualified nurses are looking for jobs. Once you can have expreience they can recruit you to a vacancy for an experienced nurse and are more likely to get the LMO.

Re: Nursing

Hi there,

Even with a degree in nursing degree if CARNA (their equvilant to our NMC) feel that you have any 'skill gaps' then you may be asked to do an assessment which consists of exams, interview and practicals. They can then identify if you need to complete any further study/training. I am an adult nurse but in Alberta they don't branch out so they wanted to check my peads skills so my main advice would be to get very varied placements if you can. I know not everyone has to complete the SEC assessments but I they decided to check your skills it's worth it. The fact I only have a diploma has not even been an issue, it was just because my peads experience is in theatres so is quite specialised.

Have a look on the Carna website for the updated info.

Hope this helps

Good advice this. Not only do you need theory and practice in childrens nursing, but also obs/psych/community. Also make sure that you get a good med/surg mix. I know a general nurse who did not have enough hours in surgery.

Re: Nursing

Also make sure you get everything properly completed on your transcripts with all hours both theory and practical seperated. Because I did my paeds back in 86 I have to be assessed on that and because my university lumped all my study time into one when I converted to RN I have to do a couple of specialised courses Not sure how much this is going to cost me

Re: Nursing

Hi Michelle,

I'm not too sure where you are studying but I too did an Adult Nursing Diploma and got accepted for CARNA with no probs.

If as part of your diploma you do a midwifery, mental health and childrens placement you should be fine. However, your Uni need to be very good at stating to CARNA that although you did an Adult nursing course that you also spent time on other placements and studied children/midwifery/mental health as part of your common foundation programme (the first 18 months of your training, unless it's changed?)

I also made sure that whenever I was on placement that I got experience of other areas e.g on Community placement I went out with the health visitors to babies and on A&E I spent time with the childrens nurses and the mental health team. All this was documented and signed by them in my portfolio and all counted towards 'esposure to other branches of nursing.'

CARNA were pretty happy that I had seen and done enough mental health/childrens as a student nurse and thankfully I didn't have any problems. Just make sure it's all documented.;)

Hope this helps...

Hi wispor
Thanks for that, so the best thing for me to do is in my first year get as many different placements as poss????
I do actually think i read the carna website wrong and think it may be for those who are studying in canada but i might be wrong????
Thanks for replying feel less worried now.

Offer of Employment

My wife got a call from Calgary Healthcare and a letter of employment is winging its way to us. So good news.

Must admit though the phone call left us a little deflated as we were told that the number of jobs were reducing by a lot. Last year no prob finding placement this year you might have to work in 2 different departments. New hospital may be beinging scaled back.

Also this is the first time we have met such a negative attitude to work the only ray of light i see is that maybe she is trying to ensure you can see that it isnt all roses.

But still now it is waiting for the postman, LMO then TWP so hopefully all moving on.

Re: Nursing

just to let you know that calgary health region are not recruiting any international trained nurses at present due to the ecomonic downturn.at present many canadian nurses who worked casual(BANK) are now taking permanent positions .of coarse this may all change again before you qualify and the rest of alberta may be different .good luck with your journey across the pond susie q

Re: Nursing

susie, as said above they called us today that thet are still taking on international nurses but just in much smaller numbers and you may have to work in 2 departments. So maybe not all doom and gloom but the positive vibes have gone, come over we will get you a job has definatly gone. So will be waiting for the postman with the dog.lol

Hi Michelle, I'm starting the Graduate diploma in Nursing this April at the BCU and am banking on it getting me to Canada! Just out of interest, have you started your diploma yet? Also, are you studying in Brum? Just being nosey!! Julie :)

Re: Nursing

Jus for info and may change again but at the moment you need a degree to get into some provences. Alberta isnt one although we have heard that they are looking to change this at "sometime in the future" so be aware once you have qualified the rules may have changed.

Hi Michelle

Wot a coincidence - is your friend interested in Canada too? I'm hoping that the library at BCU is well stocked or else it will be Amazon as you suggest. We are looking at Nova Scotia - Lunenburg - hopefully! Just love it there. We spent time there in 2006 and last summer - but won't be able to afford it this year with being a student!! We went in Aug last year - the weather was fantastic. As we left the UK it was raining here!! I applied for Canada under the Simplified process in Oct 06. To my surprise we received the 90 day update letter in Nov last year. I'm hoping that the process drags out longer so that I can complete the diploma though. What stage are you at Michelle? Julie :)

Hi Michelle,

I am currently in the 2nd of my adult nurse training, and i am also interested in moving to Canada (Vancouver to be precise) when I qualify.
Having said this, I have done some research, here and there, and have also been told that it may be necessary to make up hours or take additional training in paed/ mental health due to the nature of us specialising per branch here in the UK.

I don't think it is as simple as qualifying and jetting out to Canada. I would suggest definately upgrading to the degree in your 3rd year if your uni allows this, and im sure any province in Canada will require you to undertake minimum post qualifying experience.

Good luck, the training is extremely hard but it'll be worth it!

Hi Canuck,

I did adult nursing (qualified in 1995), have just gone through the whole process of getting my transcripts verified in BC, which involves applying to your nursing school in England (once you have qualified and are registering with the NMC equivilant in your chosen province) to provide evidence of the theory and clinical practice which you have covered in your training.

CRNBC (BC's regulatory body) did query my theory and practice because the mother and child box wasnt ticked (which is obviously our maternity placement) therefore i had to contact my nursing school to say i had done an 8 week placement in maternity along with all the theory...the bottom of it was its because its called something different in canada...so my nursing school had to send a new form with all boxes ticked!!!

my advice would be to get as much exposure as you can on your clinical placements...keep your own log of where you have been and the dates then you can argue the case if need be.

good luck

kae
