I've been pondering over the idea of doing a Reece trip to New Brunswick and potentially moving out there. However after reading (maybe too many) articles regarding the economic state NB is in, the tax rises, and people leaving NB. :unsure:

So wanting to stay in east Canada I'm thinking about looking into Nova Scotia, so wanted to get the opinion of the people from here.. If you live in NS, what do you think of it? those who may be looking at immigrating to NS what are your thoughts?.

Before i get the usual... look at Wiki etc etc responses. I'm only looking for the opinions of people either in NS or looking at moving to NS. I've read the Wiki. I'm not looking at wasting other peoples time.

There's nothing wrong with New Brunswick. There are plenty of jobs for those with the right skills, and it's not a bad place to live. Salaries are comparable to NS, but property prices are much lower.

Thanks guys. I done a search and read through them beforehand. affordable property is attracting me to these two provinces.

That's interesting, i read that NS were awarded this contract about a year(ish) ago. have there been any other big deals awarded to NS recently? Why did they select NS btw?

I work in IT (cloud computing and virtualisation). I know there isn't much demand in NB as I've spoken to a few recruiters and other IT companies out there.

In my experience, people find it very easy to find negative things to say about where they live, regardless of where that is. It's human nature - we focus on the negatives, perhaps so that we can work on improving them.

By the way, that article is extremely misleading - someone not familiar with how personal tax works in Canada might think that someone earning $100k would have to pay 33% more tax in 2013/2014 than they paid in 2012/2013. That's obviously not the case.

As for the job market, IT is pretty healthy in NB.

Consider Newfoundland as well if you are interested in the East coast. My sense is that the economy in St John's is better than in NS and NB, largely, but not completely, driven by oil. Property prices more expensive than NS but still possible to have a good quality of life here IMHO.

Yes. Look at everywhere in Canada on Canadian media sites and you'll see similar stuff.

There's always something about a tax gouge of some sort.

That Canadian Taxpayers Federation is always in the news whingeing about something or other. I never heard anything like as much from the UK equivalent.

But JP has at least taken advice from relevant people as opposed to the usual biased and ignorant. ;)

Hi jp11 - We moved to NS almost 2 years ago and have no regrets. We did two recce trips - and this is probably the best bit of advice I can give you - checking out places yourself will be the best way to get an idea of what they are like.

Its all pretty but I would stay near enough to Halifax that you can commute. You need to be within a reasonable distance of where the work is. Yes, there are jobs outside of the HRM but the majority are in that area.
