Greetings!
I am soon to move to Digby, NS from poxy Ontario (sorry to anyone who lives in and likes Ontario - I've been here 4 years and I HATE it!). I'm just wondering about availability of very importantn things like Robertsons Marmalade and if there are specialty stores there that sell English food (I don't NEED it but it's great to have crisps and chocolate when I'm feeling low!!! :D). Also, has anyone moved from one province to another? I'm just wondering what I'm supposed to do about car insurance, vehicle registration etc when I move over?
Any advice greatly received
(incidentally, if things are only available in Hx, that's okay - I envisage traveliing up there 3 or 4 times a year anyway :) )

No advice here about moving between provinces, we havent even got to our first province yet!

To be honest you will probably need to go to Halifax for most specialty items. You should be able to get everything there. I dont think you will get anything "exotic" in Digby but others might prove me wrong!

Doubt anyone will prove you wrong on the exotic Digby front.

I was in Pete's this morning so I checked...

They have marmalade by Frank Cooper, Wilkin & Son, Roses and Robertson's. Loads of types all around $6 per jar.

Oh, possibly a little more important... When you move you will have to do the following with your vehicles:

1. Within 90 days: Get NS license plates from Services NS. Post your old plates back to Ontario for a refund on remaining time (take all your vehicle docs with you).
2. Then, within the next 10 days, have them MVIed (Motor Vehicle Inspection).
3. Insurance - I just contacted a local broker, got some new insurance and then cancelled my Ontario insurance again for a refund.

Just a wee note - all personalised car numberplates in NS are only $80 so you may want to think up a plate for yourself.

There are up to 7 letters/numbers/spaces allowed and you simply walk in with your choices to your local registry and they find out there and then if its already been taken. :thumbsup:

But they do have to be renewed annually (after the initial two year stint) unlike regular plates which are every two years. Still a bargain IMO.

I dunno if this was legal but it was certainly very cool... I saw a big brand new looking Honda truck (Ridgeline, I think) downtown the other day which had a GB number plate on the front.

Amen to that! I found that out when I was there last month. They have scallops and fish cakes on the breakfast menu! :eek:

Yes it's legal - I brought an MG from England with me, I have my NS plate on the back and the old UK plate on the front.

Hi again.

Didn't realize that you owned an MG. I have an MGB.

I am making an assumption here that is is an old one. How does the suspension hold up in the Canadian roads? Can't decide whether to ship mine or sell it.

1967, suspension is fine, it absolutely must be garaged over her or it will become a pile of rust in a very short time. Alas with the kids, it's only 600 yards this year!

If you bring it, let me know & I'll try to remember the procedure - I got it a bit wrong and ServicesNS are a bit fussy...

So we could get a plate made up with anything on it, get it sent over and attach it without any cost or paperwork?

Makes me wonder what we could get away with... :D
