Hi I would like any advice or experiences of living in Nova Scotia, we are due to fly out there in four weeks for a two week fact finding visit, my wife is a medical secretary and I work with autistic adults, we want to make a new life and believe Canada is the place for us, why Nova Scotia unlike a lot of people we do not have a huge budget and the house prices seem low there are several autistic society's locally and hospitals ,I have been told the winters are harsh but the summers :confused: make up for it, please any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks Carl

I don't live in Canada but am married to a Canuck and my stepson and his family reside in Halifax. Yes the winter's are harsh. Heavy snows and very cold temps. Summers are not all that great in my book. Have been there both in July and in August and have found the summers hot and humid.

I noted from this forum and from reading the paper in Halifax and those real estate leaflets you can pickup on the street corners that prices for homes are very reasonable.

Have a great visit and good luck with the house and employment search.

where will you be checking out on your fact finding trip ??
winters can be harsh , but in my experience , it dosn't stop because there has been a snow fall :D we had a great summer last year , i remember been on the beach and swimming in the river on the 4th of October ( with my skidu suit on ) only joking :D , it was beautiful , real high temperatures

there are some bargains to be had in the housing market , depending on where you want to settle

Where? 12 months here and i haven't come across it.
People keep banging on about the harsh winters, and admitedly everyone says this year was a mild one but i found it ok, as for the summers, last year got very hot but not at all humid.

On the topic of harsh winters, unless you live in certain parts of BC everywhere in Canada has harsh winters compared to the UK and some have it a lot worse than NS.

Harsh winters in Nova Scotia? Dont make me laugh. Last NS winter was mild compared to ours in NL. Why I hear it was hardly neccessary to get your snowblower out more than half a dozen times over the whole winter! ;)

I must say this was a mild winter and not really the norm in NS. Saying that though, most winters in Canada are harsh with snow and cold, so if you really don't like either of those elements I wouldn't bother coming to Canada. Harsh winters all over Canada, even BC has rain beyond belief sometimes! Never fear you will get used to it!

Where are you planning to visit during your trip? Are the jobs you are looking at most likely to be in the Halifax area or elsewhere? In two weeks you should be able to visit a variety of areas eg Halifax, South Shore, Annapolis Valley to get a general feel, aswell as spending some time around an area that seems most likely for settling in to get more information.

Nova Scotia certainly seems to be becoming more popular as a destination. Despite what some people may imply, there are a good number of people happy to be here! For information, it does not close on Sunday - the large stores are shut, but there are plenty of smaller shops and places open if that is what you want/need.

The 30 or more BE's living in NS plus one visiting from NL who met over Easter seemed to be enjoying life in NS. Shame it didnt work out for you. Still at least you have Aberdeen and B&Q. You lucky soul.
