Very unfortunate sequence of circumstances but I think it's a lesson learned. Change your Wifi password and add MAC address filters to the router to only allow the computers in your household to connect since obviously her friends can't be trusted to use your network responsibly.
Agreed

Could you do skyplayer over there?

Because those sites recognise that you are not in the UK and as of this time will not play the content.

There has been some comments about BBC iplayer being made available world wide but I don't think it has happened yet.

Coincidentally, this was announced today:

"The BBC is launching an international version of its on-demand video service, the iPlayer, for Apple iPad users."

"The BBC said that the initial roll-out through iPad in a limited number of countries was seen as a pilot for a broader global service."

'"We have an exciting vision for what this service could become and will develop it based on feedback from within the markets," said Jana Bennett, president of Worldwide networks and global iPlayer.'

Explain to me under what law, in Canada at least, use of a VPN - as opposed to protocols that just happen to pass through it - of any sort would be illegal?

As others have pointed out, this is a total red-herring. The issue is most likely that someone, with or without permission, is making copyrighted material available via bittorrent.

The chances of the BBC either caring about or going to all the hassle of tracking down the originating IP address of someone watching iPlayer via a VPN are essentially zero. First off, they would have to suspect that someone was actually outside of the UK (not something they could tell from the IP address of the VPN or they have it blocked already), next they would have to get the VPN provider to hand over logs at a level of detail that I doubt most keep and, after that, they'd need to deal with foreign ISPs to get the end user details. Finally, they'd need to launch an action in a foreign court which would have a very limited chance of success anyway.

if you want BBC stuff in Canada, buy DVDs from Amazon second-hand. Takes a while to come, but you can get things dirt cheap! (Of course you need to be aware of DVD Regions - but if you're watching things on a computer then there are programs that you can use...)

We barely have internet where I am - no fancy downloading for me!

I would agree with most of what's been expressed so far. To add a simple piece of advice - don't incriminate yourself. You don't have to admit to something you haven't done.

But you do need to secure your wireless network, if you have one.

A VPN is not the same thing as a torrent, either someone has hacked your connection or your IP was assigned to someone else and Telus made a mistake.

The two are not connected, you are making an incorrect assumption as to why Telus contacted you, as I explained in detail above.

Broadcasting rights. If BBC has the rights to broadcast something within UK they can not let iplayers work outside UK.

Using a VPN to trick the system a grey area.

Basically, someone in your house is downloading movies (or something like that) via torrents. This is far more likely than someone having guessed your router password and hacking your internet connection.
