Nothing in calgary in the technical field.

If you work in Engineering don't bother coming here they don't care and don't give a sh*t!!! i'm on my way home next week it looks like!

Oh no. So sorry to hear this.

What is it you do?

Are you on a TWP?

I know the feeling! I'm on a TWP, been here for 1.5 years and my visa expires at the end of April, basically ZERO chance of getting a new LMO I'm told.....

Sure there are plenty of people in the same boat.......maybe we can get a britishexpats group discount on a flight home?

I'm a Electrical Draftsman.

Basically recruitment agents were nice but one even told me that no work existed and no one was going to hire foreigners....try again next year

I'm on a BUNAC

Re: Nothing in calgary in the technical field.

Weebie, if you're on Bunac you have an open work permit, have you tried getting work in a different field?

Guys at work just got renewed work permits.

Can you get implied status if you apply for PR?

Re: Nothing in calgary in the technical field.

not enough time unfortunatley, I need letters from employers before I can proceed with PR application. The company I work for said they aren't even going to bother applying for anymore LMO's, most likely for the next two years! If I had more experience i.e. 10+ years I would probably be ok but I don't.....nevermind, it has been an enjoyable 18 months!

True there is not a lot of engineering work out there at present, but why waste your BUNAC visa that you can only get once and are limited? Stop whinging, there is plenty of work out there that isn't in Engineering and the chances of getting a job in Alberta are probably a damn site better than getting a job in the UK.

I wouldn't bother going to agencies- why would companies pay agencies when they can get it direct? Agencies may do alright in boom time but they are the first ones to flounder in a recession

How about this for example:

http://jobs2-stantec.icims.com/jobs/6477/job

or this:
http://jobs2-stantec.icims.com/jobs/3751/job

or this:
http://jobs2-stantec.icims.com/jobs/3773/job

Oh no. Poor you. WE must get on and do our PR so this doesn't ahppen to us. I totally understand how you are not where you want to be with your PR. Can you not chase the letters for PR?

Re: Nothing in calgary in the technical field.

Even if I had the letters today, it takes 2 to 6 months to get nominee approval.......if my LMO is not approved I'm out of luck. Bunac is an option for me because I'm under 30 but again, this takes time to arrange so won't be ready before my current visa expires....

Definitely get cracking with your PR. Something which might be of use to you is there is a new 'workers class' of PR so if you have 2 or more years of canadian work experience you can get a fast tracked nomination, takes 2 weeks according to my HR department!!

Stantec has really grown in the A/E (arch/eng) industry in Canada from when they started in Edmonton. They have bought out a number of engineering/town planning and architecture firms in southern Ontario over the last few years.
