Non contract phone?
 

Can anyone give me some advice please? My husband is currently in Vancouver and needs to call companies based also in Vancouver but he only has his UK mobile. He can not find any public phone boxes and has been to a phone shop but they have said that he is unable to get a pay as you go phone????
Any ideas on what he can do?

Tell him to just get a sim card - it's the easiest option.

It is called prepaid here and all the service providers do them. The best deal right now is Koodo. Prepaid base sim cards can only be purchased from the kood booths or stores.

Assuming his UK phone isn't locked.

Are prepaid phones actually worth bothering with now? Last time I checked it seemed to be a definition of "prepaid" that didn't really mean that, you had to buy a minimum amount per month so in reality it was as expensive as a contract phone.

With 7-11 there is no minimum monthly payment, all prepay vouchers are valid for 12 months.

Or buy a $100 prepaid voucher and it's valid for 12 months (with all of them), go on a per-minute 'plan' and there is no monthly set fee.

I'm not sure if his phone is locked? - will get him to check, if it is, can you buy a cheap mobile phone that the sim would work in?

So basically some ridiculous amount of money per 30 days (so why not just go on a contract) or 50 cents per minute.

Bargain. :thumbdown: And I'm assuming if you don't use it for awhile they turn it off, so basically you have to pay x amount per month.

Gee I wonder why they're building new office buildings all over the place.

Do these 7-11 SIMs actually get a signal?

No, they don't turn it off as long as you have a credit balance. My sister has a prepay Rogers, she uses it when they go camping only.

25c per minute with Wind, Rogers, 7-11 and several others. If you only use it occasionally then it's fine.

Not with Koodo, minutes don't expire and no monthly requirement.

Won't it depend what sort of UK 'phone he has - whether locked or not? Do the new iphones and their counterparts even have a sim card you can change? I have no idea how to get the back off mine!

I have a cheapo junk phone that I purchased from the local grocery store (Indpendant) for $35 that I use when I'm in Canada on pay as you go. Does the job, but some of their pay as you go packages you even have to pay for incoming calls. Rip off, but that's the way it is.

It's much more expensive in Canada but they do a lot of unlimited evening and weekend call plans.
Also if you are considering using data on your phone then haggling for a monthly plan might be best

Another vote for speakout 7/11. Min top up is $25, sim is $10
For just a few calls add a $20 value plan online and you get you 100 Anytime Minutes, FREE Canada Long Distance, Unlimited Canada/US text, FREE US Text, FREE voicemail.
Or buy credit and use skype? That's what I do rather than a landline

Husband and I are both with Koodo.

I'm on Prepaid (basically the equivalent of PAYG) with my unlocked phone. You pay a fee for one month of connectivity, depending how much you are going to use the phone, then you can add "boosters". So I'm on the $15/month base plan which is just service and unlimited texting including picture and international. I then just add 500 minutes ($25) and 1GB of data ($30, includes LTE) and run down those balances as I use them, since they don't expire. My phone is usually on wireless and I don't make or receive many calls, so this is working really well for me.

My husband uses his phone a lot more. He went on Prepaid for awhile, then waited for Koodo to come out with a Double promotion, which they do about twice a year. So he signed up for their $45/month plan which is unlimited texting, 1GB data, 500 minutes, unlimited incoming, unlimited evenings and weekends from 5pm.

We both also have Canada-wide calling (so no Canadian long distance).

Neither of us have any complaints with Koodo. The coverage is good, the internet speed is good, LTE is included and not at a premium, and good customer service. No complaints at all. :)
