Employment law does not allow for no paid vacation in any province for employed workers. However one has to build up vacation entitlement. Provinces vary, in BC for example an employee gets a minimum of 4% of salary for the first 5 years then 6%. As has been said, a lot depends on demand, labour availability and who needs who the most.

Nothing wrong with asking for more of an allowance if one feels to be in a strong negotiating position.

As far as I am aware, public holidays and statutory holidays are one and the same thing. they are in BC anyway.

N-S is different, according the link I posted earlier there are 5 stat hols and a bunch of other days stores cant open which are not designated as stat hols, so employers need not pay out for them.

One thing is clear to me from this thread....check you LOCAL rights, dont assume that what applies in one province will apply to others.

Good news (for me anyway) - I have just been offered another job where you do get paid holiday from Day 1. Much better all round benefits as well, so quite an easy decision to make !

Not always possible when unions are involved, collective agreements are revered more than the bible in NS
