It needs to. If it doesn't (which can happen due to data entry error - perhaps related to some NEXUS staff seemingly incapable of knowing what is actually required..?) you'll most likely end up with US border agents sometimes taking a bit longer than usual, occasionally asking a few more innocuous-sounding drill-down questions, and then if you get really lucky you'll end up with one that tells you why all of this is going on, and suggests you get your card updated and make sure the people you're speaking with completely understand what needs to be actioned... as happened to me. I don't recall which location screwed that up, but paid a visit to the YYZ Terminal 1 office (which I think has moved around a bit since) and finally got it sorted out.
Things may have changed (hopefully for the better) in the handful of years ago this was for me, but I somehow doubt it

Replacement card came through yesterday and states my citizenship is Canadian.
Everything is now completed
