I shop here occasionally: www.valbellagourmetfoods.ca - way better than the crap at the supermarket.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. No we don't have jobs to come too, will get round to that at some point in the future. we have 16 yr old son and a large dog. Our house backs onto the golf course. Thanks for the offer of advice- I'm sure we will be using the site and offers all too soon. Ann:thumbsup: |

Guess you could do the hour+ each-way commute into Calgary twice a day for work? I'm sure others do it. I would live there in a heartbeat if it wasn't for the fact our careers are now established in Calgary. Good luck!

Re: NEWBIES - moving to Canmore
Well, himself has been doing it for 6 whole weeks now. No idea if he'll last the year, ask me in 11 months... ;) Given that he used to commute for well over an hour in gridlock in the UK he claims it's fine, but he's definitely picked the right time of year to start! :D

A good friend of mine lives in Canmore. She says that people try this and, invariably, give up within a year. Doing it once a week to go skiing pisses me off, and I love to ski, heaven knows how one would cope doing it for one week.
Compared to the trains in London, or the drives in North Van/Ontario/Okotoks, etc it's not really too bad. I find it a good way to wind down after a days work.... ;) |

Wow. That's about 50,000km a year just on the commute.
Open highway driving is easy on the car, very rarely end up in traffic so spend less on fuel relative to anyone on the Deerfoot. Do all my own minor maintenance to keep the car ticking over nicely. Only downside is Friday evenings in the summer...... Damn RV's! |

If you are doing it in an hour you may have your foot pressed a little too hard on the gas:rofl:

Not bashing, just have had many Deerfoot users snigger at my commute, then come in the next day complaining about the traffic! :D |

Fair do's, it's just that I don't think I would choose to emigrate just to end up with a 50,000km commute. I agree with you it's not difficult, it must just get helluva boring after a while.
And besides.... there are trade-offs.... You dont have to deal with the crazy weekend ski-field traffic in Winter and when it's too snowy to commute mid-week.... It's easy to get to the ski-hills :D Hey... Each to their own! |
Re: NEWBIES - moving to Canmore
But how long does it take in the winter?

I could drive faster in the summer, but the risk of a ticket (higher insurance premiums and/or loss of license would affect my ability to work) for the 10mins saved is not worth it. Besides, it sooo much easier to set cruise and enjoy the view/sh!t-show. In Winter there is a LOT less traffic (mid-week, weekend ski traffic is a totally different game!), the road is maintained and plowed very efficiently. There were maybe 3 or 4 days last winter where I had to slow to 80 for most of the journey due to blowing snow (if you cant do 60 then it's probably not safe to be on the road at all). Good Winter tires & a soft foot will get you all the way to the city limits, no problems..... After that, well it's Calgary! Of course on the really heavy snow days I booked a vacation day and headed west instead! (Thankfully my boss is a skier too!) :D |
Re: NEWBIES - moving to Canmore
My wife just started commuting, I don't think it will last any more than a year. Takes her 1hr 20 mins each way going all the way round the stoney. Silvertip is pretty nice Rustic and the Silvertip golf course does good food and they also have a bar grill.
