Newbie-help n advice
 

Dear all
i have just joind the forum and hope to get some great advice. our family plan to move to canada through the SWP and this will be in about 18m. we dont want to be in reallyzero temperature, but relaise canada does have frezzing winters. we hve 2 kids are 11 and 4 and are thinking of ontario region. any sugestions for nice middle class neighbourhoods with great schools,public or private. we will have about 500k to spend on a home. jobs hope to to within immigration is posible or border patrol which is our field. i figure this would be the toroto aree but dont want to be right in the city. we would like a diverse neighborhood, we are of carribean/african descent. what is Ottawa like also. sorry if this is too long but hope u can help:

Don't know much about Ontario but I do know that immigration/boarder patrols are jobs which only Canadian citizens can have. All federal goverment jobs are offered to canadain citizens first, even RCMP is only Canadian citizens only (but I know this may be changed in future)

thanks so much for the quick reply. soory was the RM jobs stand for? i wonder if thye take anyone skilled workers in these regions at all. maybe will have to look in another field

To get up to speed on Canadian immigration, I suggest you read the Wiki article called Quick Guide to Canadian Immigration.

Just yesterday I provided Moody1 with a response that would be quite relevant to you too in the discussion thread entitled Canada work permit/immigration advice needed please.

In my opinion, you have close to zero chance of getting into Canada if you focus on Ontario, where the labour shortages are not as acute as they are in some other provinces, such as Alberta. As you will find out when you read the immigration article to which I gave you a link, getting into Canada within what I would consider a reasonable timeframe involves finding a job that no qualified Canadian resident wants. I'd be very surprised if that happened for you in Ontario.

Depending on the resources you have at your disposal, the Nova Scotia Community Identified Stream may be a route for you to consider.

You say you're of Carribean / African descent, but you haven't said where you're living now. If you're used to a hot climate, as I was, I don't know if I'd recommend Canada to you. Actually it didn't bother me when I was new to Canada. Back then I thought winter was novel. But now I've been here for all but 4 of the last 31 years, the novelty of Canadian winters has worn off for me.

At the end of the 1990s my husband's employer transferred us to Australia for 2.5 years. I liked Australia for a lot of reasons, and the climate was one of them. You may be interested in the Wiki article called Canada versus Australia.

I've visited Ottawa only as a tourist. I personally like it, but there are mixed feelings about it on this forum. Some people like it, and other people find it boring. I don't quite know why that is. I think people who want a lively night life find it too quiet. People who likes outdoorsy, family-oriented activities seem to enjoy it. It has an extreme climate, in that it gets very hot and humid in summer, and it gets lots of snow with very cold temperatures in winter. You may be interested in the Wiki article on Ottawa.

But I don't really know why I'm telling you about Ottawa because, as I said before, if you want to get to Canada in a reasonable timeframe, I don't think Ontario is a practical destination.

Although you may not have wanted to hear what I've said, I hope it's been useful to you.

Thaks you for your very detailed reply. i will check out the weblink.

Firstly we are from the UK but have lived in various countries with my DH work. You say that Ontario is not a good bet for the skilled workers programme. Am i right in thinking that once you have enough points and get through your interview, you are granted enrty, then you must find a job? As i menioned before our field is immigration/border patrol; but seems you have to be aresident. i guess we would look for some work at the airport-perhaps? we are flexible on provinces but want to be in a diverse area. thanks

Hello again, zaze.

You will have to wait a long time to get permanent residence (PR) via the skilled worker route. One you have PR status you will be authorised to accept any job with any employer in any part of Canada (except for certain government jobs that are reserved for Canadian citizens).

If you speed up your entry to Canada, you would need to find a job that no qualified Canadian resident wants. That means moving to a part of Canada that has labour shortages.

You really need to read the Wiki article called Quick Guide to Canadian Immigration.

It also would help to read the Wiki article called Labour Shortages, with particular attention to the Occupation Under Pressure lists.

Thanks this is what i though. i have read all the artcles. We are happy to wait for the SWP as there is no great rush for us. However i would be greatful for help/advices on areas as i mentioned. thanks

If you're happy to wait 5-8 years for SW visa then you don't need to find job once you get there - you can do whatever you like (as long as it's legal!). You don't have to work if you don't want to, you can study, or you can work - it would be completely up to you.

I have no idea about working in airports I'm afraid, but hope that helps answer your question about having to find a job once you are there. :)
