Hi guys

I'm new to the board, been kinda lurking around reading previous posts.

My name is Kirsty and I'm from Glasgow, Scotland married to Stephen, got 2 brats, Aimee 8 and Archie 2 next month & not forgetting the 5 mad siberian huskies (anyone with any info on how to get the dogs over would be appreachiated)

Looking for all the help and advice you guys can give.

Were having to go the skilled workers route, securing a job first (not that easy ) through my husbands trade as a stonemason, I work as a secretary at Strathclyde University although when we move I'd like to take a few months to find our feet with child care etc before I start to look for work.

Were in two minds as to whether use an immigration specialised or try and do it ourselves, although I suppose the longer it takes on our own we will end up using one.

Been in contact with a Warren Green, met him at the immigration show at Edinburgh the other week, anyone know anything about him?

Speak soon

My advice given the options you've listed is to go it alone.

Ditto what Butch said, if you have to find a job then it's not worth paying somebody to help you - they can't help you find work anyway (it's illegal) so you'd have to do most of the legwork yourself.

As an aside, are you sure you will find an employer willing to wait the 6-12 months it will take you to get PR before your husband can start work? It's just that he's not in an industry in demand and the construction industry is being hit hard due to the recession in Canada at the mo, so I'm not sure an employer will wait a potential year for him to get over there?

Might be worth looking into going via a TWP instead as that'll be quicker so you're more likely to find an employer willing to do that, and then upgrade to PR once there.

And there is info in the Wiki (on blue bar at the top of page) about transporting pets which should help.

Best of luck and welcome to the forum.

Hi Kirsty and family,
welcome to BE. you will find this a very supportive site (thats my experience).

we (OH, Me, 2 dogs and 2 tortoises) are vancouver bound hopefully in june. i am a nurse and hubby is a plasterer/dryliner.

i have secured a job, OH will look when we get there. we are going by the TWP route, so OH will get Spousal Open Work Permit (SWOP) with my application. I am awaiting 1 form then I can get the pack to London.

We are taking the PNP route so once i have completed my 3 months in my job, I along with employer will go through te PNP process together.

We have done the whole thing ourselves (with alot of advice from others from of BE).

We have sorted the pet shipping out too....which you will stress about more than getting yourselves there.

do check out the wiki cos its really helpful re shipping pets. I personally would do it all myself and wouldn't bother hiring someone to help.

goodluck with it all.

Hi K,

Welcome to the forum.

As most others on here have indicated, unless there is a real complication in your circumstances, the process is straightforward enough to manage on your own and their is LOADS of advice to be had off this forum to help you whenever you get stuck.

Kind regards,

Eamonn & Janet.

Hi there, we came over in november from East Kilbride, we used Air supply for our dog and they were brilliant, depending on time of year there may be no direct flight from glasgow, our mutt had to fly to heathrow first but there was no problem and my dog is a bit of a wuss but he arrived here no problem. We didnt use an immigration lawyer, they can be very costly and unless you have a serious problem to get round the application is easily done yourself and I believe they do things no quicker than you can yourself. Our internet goes off today for 2 days as moving to our new home but if you need any advice you can email me , good luck with the dog, what type of dog is it because if its really small some airlines let you take it on board as extra baggage but to be honest we travelled with 2 young kids and my mother in law shipped the dog a few days later, that worked out best for us as its all a little difficult with kids and luggage etc and dealing with customs without having to worry about collecting the dog, take care now and let me know how you get on

From Judy in Calgary, July 29th. 2008.

If you're going to the Calgary area, you might try Julie Parry (located in Okotoks), Warren Green (located in High River, but with an office in Okotoks, I think), or Helen Parnell in Cochrane.
