New Federal Statutory Holiday (Canada)

30th September...

As you may be aware, the government recently passed legislation to make September 30th a federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

OH!
I hadn't taken that in.

So, kids will go back to school after Labour Day in September (in most provinces), then a day at the end, then Thanksgiving on the 11th October.

In all honesty, how many people will truly and honestly take that day as it is meant, a day of remembrance??

Isn't this just a federal holiday i.e. a bit like Remembrance Day? In other words, non-government workers won't be given a day off work?

Well, I suppose it depends on where you work.

We both worked at a university and always got Remembrance Day off.

I’m a realtor. Tried to have a house sale close on that day only to be told it’s a holiday. So banks and lawyers are obviously having it off.

BC Governments press release for it.

If one is in a profession that gets holidays off, suppose its nice to have one less workday.

Next to none. About as many who think of those who defend/defended the country on Remembrance Day other than at 11 am and then take the rest of the day off. The cynic in me smells an election coming soon.

My company just announced that our offices will be closed on this day for this year, however, the email also said this.

Please note that recognizing September 30th this year is an interim measure while the Province begins to engage with Indigenous partners, business and labour communities to determine the most appropriate way to commemorate this day going forward.
