New career-advice please!
Hullo :)
Please can I ask you to advice me as I'm struggling to make a decision. I have recently completed the Open University degree, however I have not kept any particular job for long enough to say now that I have enough knowledge & experience to offer to any Canadian employer (been "stay at home mum" for a few years). My husband is the main applicant but I would like to increase my chances to get a job when we land in a few years time. I'm thinking of doing accountancy courses. Do you know whether there's a demand for accountants in Canada (Ontario most likely)? Or - polish is my 1st language...Shall I train to be a translator perhaps? Any ideas? Please help! Thank you guys! Monika |

From what I have read it seems that all 'foreign' qualifications need to be transferred into Canadian equivalents anyway. You may be better undertaking a course once there, which will be recognised.
I've tried to find on-line distance learning courses from Canada, which I could do whilst still in UK but to no avail. I'm the opposite, lots and lots of experience and responsibility over here, but still can't seem to find a job over there as they are very qualification orientated. There do seems to be quite a few accountancy vacancies, so perhaps that might be the way to go but remember you will have to take their own quals once there also. Good luck with everything. |

True. However, I would love to do something now anyway, have enough time on my hands... What do I do?
Well, I'd like to win the Lottery to be honest and be the employer rather than the employed for a change. I'm in destination management & marketing (tourism in other words) but might change career and go for the fast food serve option...looks likely.:blink: |

summer 75, you may try a job with an Insurance Company taking an Underwriting course, starts at about $40k, then go from there.
Lots of Accountants, most with CA, and speaking Polish in Canada, who doesn't. |

Or why not start a home-based business which can be moved to Canada if necessary? You could start off by offering translation services to local university/college/school etc (I think Polish speakers are very much in demand in education atm). FYI for those who want to do distance learning through a Canadian institution .......
We have a handful of friends who have obtained degrees through Athabasca University. One of them did it while she was with her husband on an expat assignment in Qatar. |
