Default New Brunswick what's it like?

Hi, I am thinking of relocating from North Alberta to New Brunswick - any advice on the best places to live, what it's like for schooling, family life etc? For work purposes what are the building merchants like for stock especially - is it easy to get hold of hardwoods? Thanks.

Good. Good. Good.

No reason why hardwood would be hard to find.

Best place to live in NB - Fredericton - but I could be biased Family life here is brilliant, there is always something going on. My son is too young for school but from what I've heard there are some very good schools here.

No idea about the hardwood though sorry

One of Canada's have-not Provinces but has some very attractive areas, towns and cities. As far as hardwood is concerned do you mean harvested/finished hardwood products or the amount of hardwood forests in the Province? Try:-

Among the things missing......traffic, high crime levels, pollution, language disputes like those in Quebec.....

Other things missing....controls on high property taxes, enlightened health and welfare policies....

Great place to live, cheap housing. Make sure there's a medical plan/insurance for any potential prescription needs.

Just hang on a sec!

A have not province????
I live in the Greater Moncton area.
Houses and apartment blocks are springing up everywhere.
The paper is full of job opportunities, and not just call centres.
The potential here for business is also good.

We are considering a move to Ontario, simply because our sons both live in Toronto and we would love to be closer to them.
But looking at Ontario's problems, New Brunswick seems much better placed.
Add to that the already stated beauty. Its a very friendly place too.

By the way BS43. where are you????

Me thinks they were talking about inter-provincial transfers.

In Canada a have-not Province is defined as one that receives equalization payments from the Federal Government, so New Brunswickers and other Provinces can have a standard of living equal to that enjoyed by the rest of the country. It has nothing to do with its beauty or friendliness of the residents. Incidentally Ontario which has always been a major contributor to the system has just become a have-not Province mainly because of the loss of its industrial base.

I understand the distinction.... but it doesn't feel like a have-not province. It ain't perfect, but I could only imagine living in Newfie or Nova Scotia as an alternative, and that's not because they are any better - just a different shade of tree and shape of coastline.

That may be so, but if the OP said they were thinking of moving from NB to AB would you have started your post with "Alberta is a mega rich, cowboy filled province"?

When we lived in BC and were planning the move over here, all our Canadian friends thought we were insane. As far as they were concerned, there is no work here in NS, the standard of living is poor and it is basically poo. They couldn't be more wrong.

The expression "have-not Province" was not intended as a pejorative comment. It's just a fact and not reflective of how I view the population of New Brunswick or the Province itself. I did not infer the standard of living is poo. What I said is they receive Federal payments to improve the general standard of living. That is a fact as it is for other have-not Provinces. I have friends who moved to New Brunswick last year and never for one nanosecond did I think or suggest they were making a bad move.

Expensive business getting a place with room for animals usefully close to Toronto. You might be forced to join us north of the 89!

tsk tsk and a Merry Christmas to you. It is not something any of us should be concerned about, particularly at this time of year.
