Default New baby and passport

My wife gave birth to a little girl 4 days ago. Forgive me if I don't do a search but just ask this question.......I'm too tired to be bothered

I know we can apply for a Canadian passport for her but question is can we apply for a British one too?
Thanks

Assuming one of you is a British citizen then yes. You simply apply using the Canadian birth certificate & copy of your UK passport. (I believe it calls for original but I'm lead to believe that a copy suffices). I've not yet done so for my kids (2 & 5) but will do before too long.

Oh yes, and congrats on the birth. Sleep? Who needs it anyway?

Not necessarily. To find out if the baby is British, we'd need to know the parents' citizenships and places of birth.

Sorry, no info but congratulations on your new baby and may your sleepless nights be short-lived!

Yes, as long as at least one of the parents is able to pass on British citizenship. Most commonly, for that to be true, at least one of the parents would need to be a British citizen 'not by descent'. This means at least one of them gained British citizenship in their own right rather than through their own parents i.e at least one of them was born in the UK or naturalized. There are some exceptions e.g. for parents who are overseas in the service of the UK government.

3 of my 4 children were born outside the UK (2 of them in Canada) and all are British citizens by descent through me and my wife (we were both born in the UK).

Note that you can't register the baby's birth through UK consular birth registration. That option is not available to people born in Canada and some other countries (e.g. Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa).
