Oh, if you haven't yet moved you can plan for this potential liability. What I did was to take all my UK assets and convert them to cash. I then purchased two drinks at Heathrow, conveniently arriving with nothing and so no concerns about possible appreciation of the nothing.

Of course, anything over $10k has to be declared to the immigration folks.
