Default Moving from Vancouver to Fall River/Windsor Junction/ Waverly area in NS

Hi
We moved to Vancouver 2 years ago but the house prices have risen 100 % and we now can never afford to buy a house. we are wanting to move to NS because my OH loves the maritimes and knows it well. We have researched and quite like Fall river area. Does anyone live there please ? the schools have good write ups is this true please ?
I can't seem to find any information about playgrounds or parks in the area?
Any help or tips would be great. cheers
pinky

Default Moving from Vancouver to halifax

anyone else moved?
We came to Vancouver 2 years ago and when we decided to come we could have easily afforded a 4 bed house . now we are totally priced out .
We are moving to ns.
We know car insurance is less but rates are double.
anyone else done the move ?

My daughter almost 20 years ago!!

She earns a good salary, probably a little less than she would get in Vancouver (principal in a firm of architects), but has a lovely house at a great deal less than here.

Her husband is a long-term teacher, good salary, incredible benefits (probably much better than in Vancouver).

Son is having a great education, needs some assistance which he is getting in the school district they are in, but almost certainly would not be getting here.

She has found that cars do not last as long as here because of rusting due to the road salt.

Weather will probably/possibly be colder and snowier than here, depending on where you live. We've had some horrendous snow falls around Christmas time in the Metro Halifax area. Summers can be hotter and more humid than here.

NS does get the tag ends of several hurricanes every year, ranging in strength from having been reduced to tropical storm (ie torrential rain) to strength 2 or 3. These are followed by nor'easters in winter, with incredibly chilly and strong winds especially near the coast.

It's closer to Britain if going back for visits is important to you (it wasn't a huge deal for us, as there were always other places to see).

As your 2 threads are about the same subject (albeit one was specific to a town/area whilst the other was generic to NS) - that way all your answers will be in one place and it's easier for people to keep track and make sure they aren't duplicating information across different threads.
Good luck with your relocation!

Hopefully these links will be of use to you..
This one has a google map with all the playgrounds in the area marked:

No idea why it brings a map up (I put it in spoiler for those that are trying to view the site on their phones etc., lol) - but click on it and then 'view larger' then when the map opens expand the area (or zoom in) to cover where you want to look then click 'search this area' and it will bring up all the playgrounds (you can change it to 'parks' or anything else you need to research). No need to sign in - thats Google for you!

I don't know what facilities you need, or whether you have children, but I looked at the 3 communities you named, and two are very small

Windsor Junction has a population around 1,500 ........ I must admit that we take the VIA train The Ocean twice a year that passes through WJ but the village isn't mentioned in the schedule, so it doesn't even count as a whistle stop! Schools etc are not even mentioned

Waverley has a slightly larger population, over 2,500, an elementary school and a retirement home

Fall River is the largest of the 3, with a population around 12,000 ........... has elementary and high schools, a shopping centre.

Public transit is basically non-existent in the rural areas, so you would probably need 2 cars if you both intend to work or need independence.

You really need to go over and tour the areas!

Friends (British but not posters on BE) have recently moved from Newfoundland to NS & bought a house in Fall River. They couldn't be happier with the area. One of them had a job already that she could do in NS while the other lucked into pretty much his dream job straight away. I believe Fall River is a bit of a Brit enclave - certainly posters here in the past lived there. (remember Tuppence anyone?). Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is I think up to you! :-)

Hi, we live up the road abit from the Fall River area. All the areas you have mentioned are pretty much similar. They are close geographically and look the same. Its very beautiful (of course) and close enough to Halifax that a cab home on a night out wont bankrupt you and there are buses. It is however an area that suffers congestion in the mornings and evenings. The exit off the 118 to Fall River is always backed up northbound. Likewise getting onto either the 118 or the 102 in the mornings takes some time.
If this is no biggie to you, then you will likely be pretty happy. Make sure when you are buying your house that you find out about the property taxes. People in that area pay more for that than we do up the road in the Elmsdale area (and we have more amenities).
I cant comment on Vancouver as have never been there, but wish you luck in your move.

There is a good bus service from Fall river to Halifax. Handy for commuting and airport

Hey Pinky,

We live in Windsor Junction and love it. It is pretty central for most places that we need to get to.

How is your visit going, did you view the few houses that are for sale in WJ? It's the kind of place that when people move to it they tend to stay. Schools are fab and there is a great community feel.

If you have any questions please shoot me a DM.

Kaz
