Moving from UK to Quebec?

Hi all,

We are currently looking at moving to Quebec in the next 2 years and was wondering if anyone on here lives there and has any advice? We are 23 & 24 and have no dependants.

Both of our companies have branches in Montreal so a transfer should be possible and we have fallen in love with properties in Monteregie and Laurentides. Both of which are 30-45 minutes drive of our branches of work. (According to google maps!) We will be visiting next year to put that to the test ourselves!

Has anyone got any advice about Quebec? We know we need to speak basically fluent French then try to change that to Quebec French and that we will need at least a 30% deposit for a mortgage.

Thank you all in advance!

I would have a good read of this link regarding Intra Company Transfers. Im guessing neither are Senior or Executive Managers
International Mobility Program: Canadian interests – Significant benefit – Intra-company transferees [R205(a)] (exemption code C12)

Hi Thanks for the reply,

We're looking to move over on the Points system but have a job lined up with an inter company transfer rather than doing the move through the company.

I don't think that loophole is even possible, and you would need fluent French for Quebec...

Hi TiryTory,

Why does this not seem possible?
If we qualify for the move through the points system it would be the same as having a job already lined up? All that would be required is for me to make the move to a sister company of the one I am at currently?

Yes we have seen you need to know fluent French for Quebec... it's actually one of the reasons we chose it over Vancouver!

As long as you're meeting the points score for Quebec Skilled Worker without a job offer (or the company are happy to help you do the VEO, and the job is specialist enough to not be able to be filled by a Canadian), then that's fine and I don't see any reason why you couldn't do that personally.

Best of luck.

Oh but you seemed to imply that you weren't fluent? Rereading it sounds like you have no French (yet).

Hi Christmasoompa,

Yeah we have done a couple of points calculators online and seem to get over the required on each one so hopefully they are accurate

Hi Tirytory,

It's more a case of learning it more fluently and then the change over to Quebec French as I understand they pronounce things differently :p

Er, Montregie and Laurentides are not exactly small areas. A vague idea of where these properties are help. As would knowing where in Montreal the jobs would be.

Hi,
we moved to Quebec 19years ago about 1 hour from Montreal .We moved 6 months later over the border to Ontario even though my husband continued to work in Quebec . We discovered the tax is cheaper in Ontario and there is way less red tape, plus we had schooling issues .
Yes the areas you mention are nice and property is much cheaper here than in Uk but remember the 45 min commute will not be 45mins when there is 3ocm of snow falling ...that will be a long winter commute ..I would suggest that you rent in Montreal initially ,its a fun city for young people and there re some lovely areas to live .its easy to get out the city too .
Good luck with the move .

If your branches on Montreal Island then you need to seriously think of revising the commuting times, especially from Monteregie. Unless your using the subway or not travelling by road in the rush hours it'll be a 1-2 hour each way commute. Those times were standard when I left Montreal in 2007.

I would suggest that Quebec French is not only a difference in pronunciation but also the use of different words

They have not improved.

We avoid trying to get through Montreal. If we are heading to the MIL, on the South Shore, we cross the river long before MTL. If we are going up to Quebec, we go right over the top (St. Jerome, Joliette etc).
