moving to Toronto with work
 

Hi everyone, could do with some advice -
My husband has been offered a transfer from UK to Toronto and we've a couple of days to decide if we want to go for it.
Problem is we have two sons 12 and 15 - the 15 year old is half way through 2 year GCSE course. Anyone else moved to Canada with kids so near to exams?
What are his options educationally as the secondment is likely to be only for 3 to 4 years.
Also, anyone recommend an area to live in Toronto - do small towns with green areas exist.
Lastly, just in case you are not asleep yet, my youngest is soccer mad - do canadians take footy seriously?

You should work out what the prospects of getting permanent residence in Canada are, as otherwise you'll be facing a one-way trip home in due course.

And if you have to be on a work permit beforehand, make sure you are fully aware of all the risks and downsides.

our sons are of a similar age and last year we visited two schools , which were most helpful if you want some e mails of the schools, names, contacts etc just PM me....or e mail.........the schools were in the oakville and burlington area.....

......ps.........they like soccer as well as the other sportslast year when we were in toronto we saw more soccer on the tv than in the uk, with the time difference the saturday games started at 7am local time and showed 3 live games that day.............mind you it was only the premiership.....

..ps...............they do like the soccer, whilst we were in toronto last year , there was plenty of live premeirship games on tv, in fact on the saturday there were 3 live games, so when the kids get up at 7am and the with the time difference my two boys were in heaven watching soccer so early in the morning..............hope it helps....

And it's played in schools, although it's not as widespread as in the UK. My teenage stepson played a couple of seasons in his school team (mixed, BTW).

For fairly obvious reasons, the season starts about now.

Hi there, I to have a 15 year old son also a 9 year. We are in the process of a skilled worker application. I peronaly would not consider taking the 15 year old out of school so near to his final exams. My sister is a high school teacher in Toronto and has often told me that the school system in England is better. There does not seam to be a set national standard as we have over here ,as each provience sets their own rules and standards. Some one else may be able to give more in depth details, however good luck with what ever you and your family decide to do.

There are provincial standards but schools also offer the same Bac as is offered in the UK, www.ibo.org, as well as the SAT. These are international standards in the way that O and A levels once were.
