Moving to Toronto on IEC

Hello everyone. I am moving to Toronto in April on an IEC visa. I will have $13-15k CAD. Single male. Live in London so I know how to deal with costs. Just want to ask if this is feasible and if anyone else similar?
I won’t have my SIN number for a job until I arrive. But will be applying for work straight away every day. Any similar experiences would be so appreciated. Thank you!

As long as you will be living in shared accommodation and not needing a car, that should be okay. What kind of work will you be looking for?

The University of Toronto posted this article for 2024 cost of living for students

There are numerous others though how reliable they are is anyones guess and I don’t live in TO

thanks for your reply! Yes I will most likely be in shared accommodation. I work in commercial insurance broking. But I know in Canada you need a broking license. So until I could obtain that I would look for office work in sales or telesales. Things like that

Thank you so much for the useful info. I think my main obstacle will be getting work as soon as possible

It might take you a while to get licenced https://www.ribo.com/getting-a-licen...ew-applicants/

Telesales jobs, 11 in Toronto, 1 Office or 'inside' based: https://www.on.jobbank.gc.ca/marketr...s/2891/geo9219
40 general sales jobs in Toronto including retail
Most sales positions appear to be minimum wage $17.60 (or under $20 an hour)

If you need to earn extra money quickly you might want to take a Smart Serve course (online) and work in a bar or restaurant (they like an English accent) - you won't make much in wages but the tips are usually good. https://smartserve.ca/

Are you hoping to stay in Canada after the IEC has finished?

yeah I thought it would be the case. I think I’d be able to get level 1 easily if I took the test but I need to look into it more.

I think most likely the sale office jobs will be best for me.

I’ve never worked in a bar restaurant or hotel before. But it’s something I would be willing to do. I can imagine tips are really good in some places.

yes I am hoping to stay and get PR and live the rest of my life in Canada. I’m so excited. I hope I can do it. I know it’s all about points and that will mostly be determined by the work

If you are hoping to stay in Canada you most likely will need to find a skilled position, but there are sometimes selections for different industries where there are shortages of workers, might be worth looking into that too.

For Ontario: https://www.ontario.ca/page/oinp-emp...-skills-stream

For Ontario:

thank you! Well I was under the impression that I could apply through the PNP program? If I have a valid employment offer and that I’ve worked for over a year.

with that being said, I think it would be easier to get PR in Alberta right? That was my back up option. Toronto is my dream but my dream is also PR and if I can’t get it in Ontario I don’t mind going to Alberta. I’ve been there before on 2 week holiday and loved it there

If you want easier, then a less popular province is the way to go (MB, SK, NB etc). You’d definitely need a skilled job for Ontario PNP, unlike every other province they don’t have a low or semi skilled stream.

What’s your points score now on the CRS? If you can aim for EE rather than PNP it would be better, as PNP will need employer support and so you’d be taking a chance on finding a job with an employer prepared to do that.

my points after 12 months working a TEER 4 job would be 415. My job is insurance broking but I need the license as previously mentioned. If I can get into this over there I think I’d be much better. But right now I calculated after 12 months of work on TEER 4 for 415

What TEER is your previous work experience? It would need to be level 1, 2 or 3 for EE. So I would try and get a job in that skill level if you can.
