Moving to Toronto
 

Hi guys,

So my IEC came through and I'm saving for my move to Toronto from previous comments I've been recommended websites for apartments and other information which I'm thankful for. I'm still looking at jobs within the marketing / digital marketing sector so if anybody knows any websites other than indeed or linkedin regarding jobs I would be grateful but I've read employers are reluctant to hire someone from another country unless it's in demand? Also what areas would you guys recommend for newcomers?

Hi ethnicstar congratulations! When do you plan on heading out?

I get the impression that job-hunting is heavily based on networking and can involve a lot of face to face effort so it may be easier to do when you get to Toronto. My cousin did that (different field) and it took him 6 months to secure something so he had to rely on his savings for quite a while! I also work in marketing (though do more internal comms these days) and I've been recommended indeed and LinkedIn too. I haven't started looking yet though as we're moving there for my partner's job and that's still trundling along.

Make sure your cv is written in Canadian terms and style, not UK style and terms

Welcome to Toronto.

I moved here a few months ago (got PR via sponsorship from my Canadian girlfriend).

In the UK I've worked mainly in web content and digital strategy, and also done some work for the UK government in communications. The job hunt was a bit of a nightmare, partly one of my own making: early on I got offered a job, literally right after the interview, but it was in finance and I really didn't like the atmosphere so I quit after a few days, reasoning that as the first job came so easily, so would others.

This turned out to be a big mistake as I didn't even hear back from any job applications for months, let alone get an interview.

Eventually I paid someone to re-write my resume in a more 'Canadian' style and that seemed to do the trick; I got a few interviews and now have a contract position with the Ontario government, but it's taken me five months to get this far.

As others have said networking is key but for me having the Canadian-style resume rewrite did seem to really help.

You might want to get a copy of the book "What colour is my Parachute" I think that it is by Micheal Bolles. I am sure that you can get a copy on Amazon. Anyways, it will give you a better insight into turning that CV into a Resume and the text will give you a start on the expectations of the job market on this side of the water.

I think that I applied for over 30 jobs and got the big silence. I tried to follow the book and the result for me was that I sent out 5 letters with resumes, had 3 interviews and two offers.....so for me it worked! Give it a go.
