Moving to St John's, Newfoundland

Hi, some great advice on the forum.

Would appreciate hearing from anyone with any advice or links that may help my family and myself.

My spousal visa is currently been processed (submitted Oct 10). My wife is originally from Corner Brook and have 2 boys 7 and 4 and have PR status and moving over to St John's in Aug 11.

My background is Avionics in the Royal Air Force. Just looking at courses that may help my chances of getting a suitable job when I get over. Any advice on labour shortages? Understand it's not a good time across the board.

I also have an extensive and successful cycle racing / coaching and bike mechanics background.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated and festive greetings to you all.

Welcome Mick - Not really much in the way of labor shortages just now but we are getting geared up to start building a massive offshore platform here that will create a good few shortages - May want to think about how you can adapt the qualifications and skill sets that you have to help sort out employment in this market

Welcome.

Labour shortages in Oil and Gas (NLDC is the expert here) so retraining for that industry good. A lot of Newfoundland industry operates on a 'who you know basis' so networking is key. Provincial Aerospace might be worth contacting ref. Avionics as they have lots of contracts for survellience, fitout etc. Pay is not that good though from what I hear. I know an ex RAF Herc mechanic who makes a living as a truck/refridgeration mechanic.

There is a strong cycling scene here. I can put you in touch with lycra clad fools if thats your bag.;)

LOL... Any contacts would be appreciated.

Yes hi to you all and thanks for the warm welcome and advice. I will be on the forum more often now checking as I'm sure the answers to everyone's questions are amongst the members.

Networking is always good, but have always been a face to face person, so via the web doesn't seem quite right, however will have to be untill I arr soon after August.

nldfc- I also lived in SA for the first 11 years and visit now and again.

Newfoundland is such a great place where the people make it too. Can't wait to get across and settle.

Thanks again all.

If your planning on buying , the house prices in St Johns have taken quite the hike in the last few years and the latest thoughts are that there will be another 10-15% hike come springtime
